One In Five Households Watch TV Online

A new study by the Conference Board and TNS shows that one on five US households that use the Internet also watch TV online. That’s twice the number recorded just two years ago, according to Information Week.

So why has Internet TV become so popular? Convenience is the main reason, the ability to watch shows any time – but also from anywhere, and to be able to avoid commercials.

In a statement, Michael Saxon, senior VP of brand and communications at TNS, noted:

"The shift from appointment TV to content on demand is well underway. Fundamentally, consumers expect content to be available when they want it, and on the screen of their choice — TV, PC, or mobile.

"For consumers, PCs enhance content on demand from simply time-shifting to place-shifting. Online content can be viewed in any room in the house, or at work or school."

Most people – around 90% – watch from home, 15% in the office, and 6% elsewhere (some watch from multiple locations, hence the quirk in the figures). News attracts the most viewers, with 43%, followed closely by drama shows, pulling 39%.
68% of viewers watch streaming video, and YouTube grabs 41% of viewers, with network homepages attracting 65%.

Watch how Tesla’s humanoid robot recovers from a stumble
Tesla's Optimus robot.

Tesla has released a video (below) of its Optimus humanoid robot out for a leisurely stroll. The 38-second clip shows off the robot’s ability to handle soft, uneven ground, and the bipedal bot looks pretty comfortable -- for the most part -- as it walks about.

The most impressive part, however, comes at the end of the video when Optimus recovers rather gracefully from an awkward slip as it descends a small, but steep slope. To recover in this way requires a lot of complex and lightning-fast computing power, so the robot clearly does well to stay upright.

One of ChatGPT’s latest features comes to the free tier
ChatGPT's Canvas screen

In October, OpenAI debuted its Canvas feature, a collaborative interface that visually previews the AI response to the user's writing or coding request. However, it was only made available as a beta feature for Plus and Teams subscribers. On Tuesday, the company announced that it is bringing Canvas to all users, even at the free tier.

While one could easily mistake Canvas for a blatant knockoff of Anthropic's Artifacts feature, OpenAI is also incorporating a swath of new capabilities into Canvas. For one, Canvas is now integrated directly into the GPT-4o model so that it runs natively within ChatGPT, eliminating the need to select it specifically from the model-picking list.
