Photo- and video-sharing site Photobucket has joined the long list of Web-based services that have opened their programming APIs so third party developers can create applications that leverage Photobucket’s content and millions-strong online community. Photobucket has launched a new developer site for documentation and supporting materials, and announced list of initial developers including Adobe, AOL, SnapVine, and RockYou, and the company has also launched an Application Gallery that includes applications from TiVo, Eye-Fi, Blurb, and Flektor.

"We are excited to invite a world of talented developers to extend our photo and video platform and tap into the tremendous creativity and passion of our users," said Photobucket president Alex Welch, in a statement. "Photobucket pioneered the ability for people to link and share photos and videos—whether on blogs, social networks or auction sites—and the broad release of our API makes it possible to create entirely new media experiences on the Web and on devices of all kinds."

The Photobucket API enables developers to log in to Photobucket accounts, create and manage media albums, and upload new content to the service. In addition, developers can tap into media’s metadata, search publicly-available content, and share album content via email. Photobucket is offering a free non-commercial API option with open registration; developers looking to build a commercial service can sign up for unlimited traffic and bandwidth for their application, assuming Photobucket approves its business plan. Signups are open now at the Photobucket developer site.

Nvidia just released an open-source LLM to rival GPT-4

Nvidia, which builds some of the most highly sought-after GPUs in the AI industry, has announced that it has released an open-source large language model that reportedly performs on par with leading proprietary models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google.

The company introduced its new NVLM 1.0 family in a recently released white paper, and it's spearheaded by the 72 billion-parameter NVLM-D-72B model. “We introduce NVLM 1.0, a family of frontier-class multimodal large language models that achieve state-of-the-art results on vision-language tasks, rivaling the leading proprietary models (e.g., GPT-4o) and open-access models,” the researchers wrote.

OpenAI drops nonprofit status in large-scale reorganization

Reuters reports that, in an effort to make itself more attractive to investors, OpenAI plans to scrap the nonprofit structure of its core business, thereby removing the authority of its board of directors, as well as granting CEO Sam Altman equity in the company.

"We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone, and we’re working with our board to ensure that we’re best positioned to succeed in our mission. The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist," an OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters. The nonprofit portion of the business will not be done away with entirely, but instead would continue to exist and own a minority stake in the overall company.

Razer just opened the floodgates for its ‘cheating’ Snap Tap feature

Razer is expanding support for its Snap Tap feature, which rolled out a few months ago alongside the Huntsman V3 Pro keyboard. It allows much quicker inputs between two keys, particularly when it comes to strafing in games like Valorant, Apex Legends, and Rainbow Six: Siege. Now, the vast majority of Razer's gaming keyboards are getting support, along with Razer Blade laptops -- some of which are among the best gaming laptops you can buy.

Originally, Snap Tap was billed as a feature enabled by the Hall Effect (magnetic) switches, but this latest update proves that's not the case. Snap Tap allows you to switch between two keys without fully lifting your finger when switching between them. In the case of strafing, for example, you're able to bounce back and forth between your A and D keys, and Snap Tap will prioritize your most recent input. That's true even if your finger continues pressing down on the previous key, allowing for very fast, precise strafing.
