Samsung Announces SpinPoint S166 HDDs

Samsung Electronics has announced its new SpinPoint S166 series of 3.5-inch hard disk drives. The SpinPoints combine high performance (8 MB caches and 7,200 rpm speeds) with surprisingly quiet operating, emitting just 27.5 decibels during seek, and dropping down to 24 decibels in idle mode. (As a point of comparison, a soft whisper or a ticking watch usually lands around 20 to 30 decibels.) Overall, Samsung claims the SpinPoint S166 drives offer a 15 percent reduction in noise levels compared to competing hard drives, making them well-suited for use in home computers, consumer electronics like DVRs.

"Samsung is constantly pushing the technology envelope with the introduction of new and innovative products that meet the computing needs of today’s most demanding customers and operating environments," states T.J. Lee, Samsung Storage System Division’s VP of sales and marketing, in a statement. "This latest technology development by Samsung in the new SpinPoint S166 Series makes our high-end, award-winning hard drive products attractive to a wider audience by even further reducing acoustic noise and improving disk data transfer speed."

The SpinPoint S166s are available now in 80 and 160 GB capacities with either SATA 3.0 Gbps or PATA interfaces. Pricing and availability will vary by region, but it’s reasonable to assume these units will start showing up in living room computers, DVRs, and media center systems soon.

Ends soon: Save $800 on Samsung’s 49-inch Odyssey Neo G9 monitor
Front view of Samsung's new QLED Odyssey gaming monitor sitting on desk.

With Black Friday over, many great deals have finished that we aren't likely going to see coming back as Cyber Monday deals. There are still a few great deals left over, such as this deal on the Odyssey Neo G9. Samsung is still discounting it massively by $800 down to $1,500 from its usual $2,300. But you should pick it up quickly since we aren't sure when exactly the deal will expire or if it will show up again for Cyber Monday. We've already seen similar deals end in the past few hours, so if you like it, pick it up!

Why you should buy the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9
The Odyssey Neo G9 is a beast, and it might well be an odyssey once you go from one end of the screen to the other. At a whopping 49 inches, this is one of the largest ultrawides on the market, being able to fit two 27-inch panels side by side if you wanted that extra productivity boost or extra monitor. The QHD resolution across the screen also means you can get two QHD images if you want to, and that's mostly powered by Samsung's Quantum Matrix Technology which is similar to QLED. That means it creates billions of pixels for your screen and over 2,000 individually adjustable brightness zones. Even better, you get Quantum HDR2000, making the Odyssey Neo one of the brightest monitors on the market with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and excellent HDR.
