Your say Friday: Will you be going 4K this holiday?

This year’s holiday shopping season has pushed 4K monitor prices to the floor. Acer’s 28″ B286HK hit $349 on black Friday and several displays are now available with an base MSRP between $450 and $600, putting them in a range at least some will tolerate.

Turning on a 4K monitor is a striking experience if you’re used to 1080p, but there are still problems. Window’s scaling isn’t entirely up to the task and even the quickest video cards struggle to power games at 3840 x 2160. There’s also some of who are satisfied enough by their old 1080p or 1440p and don’t see increased resolution as a compelling reason to open their wallets.

Even worse -- there are other diseases that may actually be caused by standing up too long, including blood clots in the deep veins and increased circulatory issues.

Windows 11 to let you use your phone as a webcam
Using an Android phone as a webcam.

The Windows 11 update 24H2 includes a new feature called Connected Camera that lets you turn your smartphone into a webcam. The folks at PCWorld have tested the feature out, and it looks pretty easy to use, though you do need to have an Android phone to use it.

Using your phone as a webcam -- either for your desktop or your laptop -- isn't new, but native support for it has been patchy. At first, people had to use third-party apps to do the job. Then Apple users got Continuity Camera, and a few years later Android 14 users got a similar feature, too.

You’ll soon be able to use a phone without leaving your VR headset
Meta gave the Quest 3S passthrough cameras that are good enough to check my phone without taking the headset off.

The Meta Quest 3S and Quest 3 are two of the best VR headset you can buy, and they'll soon have an interesting new feature that lets you use a Motorola phone without leaving VR. Motorola Smart Connect already lets you mirror your phone to a Windows PC or smart TV. Now, your VR headset is gaining this ability too, but on a huge virtual screen.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the news at Lenovo's Tech World 2024 event, and also spoke about Meta's Llama model, as spotted by UploadVR. The model is the basis for Lenovo's AI Now, a personal agent for laptops that runs on-device without requiring a cloud connection.
