In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Toshiba has issued a recall for about 1,400 batteries sold with its Satellite A100, Satellite A105, and Tecra A7 notebook compter systems. As with so many other recalled batteries over the last year, the affected devices were manufactured for Toshiba by Sony; although no injuries have been reported, Toshiba says it was received three reports from users outside the United States of the notebook batteries overheating.
In July, Toshiba recalled some 10,000 Sony-made notebook computer batteries, saying it had received reports of two computers bursting into flames from defective batteries. The Consume Product Safety Commission says it has 16 reports of Sony-made lithium-ion computer batteries overheating.
Sony—and computer makers like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Gateway, Acer, and Fujitsu—have collectively recalled nearly 10 million Sony-made notebook computer batteries. The incident is the single largest recall in the history of the computer industry.
The latst recall online applies to selected Toshiba Satellite A100, A105, and Tecra A7 computers; recalled battery model number prefixes are PSAA0U, PSAA2U, PSAA8U, PSAA9U, PTA70U, and PTA71U. Toshiba is replacing the batteries for free; owners of affected computers are advised to stop using the recalled batteries immediately, power their systems using the AC adapter, and contact Toshiba for a replacement.
