Smell of the future: Moodo creator shows off his smart aroma machine

If you love smart home devices and live or work in a place that is in dire need of an aromatic upgrade, your interest it probably heavily piqued by Indiegogo-funded smart smell device Moodo.

A small cube-shaped device produced by longtime fragrance company Agan Aroma, the Moodo allows you to use a smartphone or tablet to create your own special blend of smells. Buyers can browse through a growing list of over 30 scent compounds, four of which are added at a time to the device as modular plastic cups — much like Kuerig’s K-Cups. Once inserted into the Moodo, users then use an app on their device to control the level to which each smell is diffused into their environment.

“On our app, we automatically recognize what scents have been inserted into the machine,” said Agan Aroma CEO Yoav Avidor in an interview at this year’s CES conference in Las Vegas, “And then our perfumers created precurated combinations that always work together well based on which perfumes are inside the box.”

Each scent added to the Moodo will last for up to 60 hours at maximum volume of release, and can fragrance an area up to 600 square feet. Avidor says that for most users, each scent should last between one and two months before it needs replacing.

With an immense array of custom scent combinations and the ability to control them with an incredible amount of control on your smartphone or tablet, the Moodo is an interesting addition to the smart home marketplace, and one that many with dogs, kids, or other smell-inducing creatures in their lives will likely very much enjoy.

The device can be purchased on the company’s website, with starter kits running between $190 and $210, depending on the size of the battery that you choose to purchase with the new device.

Samsung SmartThings learns a bunch of useful new tricks at CES 2024
A person sitting on a couch with SmartThings products in the foreground.

Samsung SmartThings -- an application designed to connect and control your smart home devices -- doesn't quite get the same attention as platforms like Google Home or Apple HomeKit. However, it made some big announcements at CES 2024, and it's shaping up to be a big year for Samsung's first-party platform. Along with enhanced support for TVs and new uses for QR codes, SmartThings is rolling out a brilliant Map View feature, which creates a digital map of your home and shows you exactly where all your connected devices are located.

Here's how it works. Instead of scrolling through a list of all your devices or jumping between groups in your smartphone app, Map View lets you see a 3D representation of your home on your smartphone. Inside this map, you'll find icons for all your smart home gadgets corresponding to their actual physical location. That means you can quickly find exactly which device you want to control without needing to scroll through a long list.

Roborock shows off highly automated robot vacuums at CES 2024
The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra placed in its dock.

Roborock is responsible for many of the best robot vacuums, and this year is shaping up to be another big one for the company. A whole fleet of robot vacuums were on display at CES 2024, including the highly automated S8 MaxV Ultra and S8 Max Ultra -- both of which can connect to your home drainage system to automatically empty and refill their water reservoirs.

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the most luxurious of the bunch, offering a self-maintained cleaning system that will empty water tanks, refill water tanks, dispense detergent, wash its mop with hot water, and dry its mop with warm air. All this is possible due to its newfound ability to connect to your home's built-in drain lines, removing the need for you to fuss around with dirty water tanks or refill water reservoirs (which is arguably the worst part of owning a robot vacuum).

Baracoda shows off first smart mirror for mental wellness at CES 2024
The BMind smart mirror installed in a bathroom.

Baracoda may not be as well-known as other smart home brands like Wyze and iRobot, but the health tech company had one of the coolest product reveals at CES 2024 with the BMind Smart Mirror. Designed to improve your mental wellness by identifying your mood and managing stress with AI, the unique product walked away from the show with a 2024 CES Innovation Award.

BMind uses generative AI and natural language processing to determine the user's mood before suggesting various exercises like guided meditation or self-affirmations. Put simply, it'll try to determine your needs based on your voice, posture, and other observable factors. The end goal is to help improve your mood using a variety of exercises, lights, sounds, and visuals -- all of which are carried on board in the mirror.
