The Fire HD 6 offers a lot of value for a little price, easily beating many off-brand Android tablets that you see for under $100. It features a 6-inch touchscreen with a 1,280 x 800 pixel display (a respectable 252 pixels per inch). The screen has also been coated in Gorilla Glass, which should make it less vulnerable to everyday scratches.
In terms of horsepower, the Fire HD 6 packs a quad-core 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Admittedly, it’s not the fastest tablet on the block, but the quad-core CPU should sufficient at quickly launching apps and streaming video.
Amazon also fitted its tablet with two cameras: a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of shooing 720p video and a lower resolution VGA camera located above the screen (very low res, but good enough for basic video chat). The tablet’s battery life is rated at up to 8 hours, which should be more than enough for a day of internet surfing or the occasional Amazon Video splurge.
Content-wise, you’ll want to have a Prime account handy, which will give you access to Amazon’s ever-growing Prime Music library, more than 300,000 apps, and hundreds of additional free or discounted apps via the Amazon Underground store. Most other major apps are available on Amazon’s Appstore, though it is not as good as Apple’s or Google’s Play Store, which is on most other Android devices.
