Apple expands subscription service to include games

With a publisher in place to launch the subscription model, Apple is offering publishers of multiple iOS games the ability to charge a monthly subscription fee to access a specific amount of games. Seattle-based Big Fish Games is the first company to sign up for the service according to a Bloomberg article. The company is developing an iPad application that will eventually charge subscribers $6.99 a month to access dozens of games formatted for the iPad. Big Fish Games is planning to launch the application at an initial subscription price of $4.99 a month and will rise to the $6.99 price point as more games are added. Identical to subscription services within other applications, Apple takes a 30 percent cut of  the monthly fee as a commission. 

big_fish_games-300x300Users will be able to access multiple games after paying the subscription fee rather than paying for each game individually. It’s a tempting option for anyone that wants to try games before making a final purchase. The games will be streamed through the publisher’s servers and require a Wi-Fi connection to play the games. Big Fish Games is also setting up a version of the application that limits players to 30 minutes of game time and delivers advertising to the user. The company currently has more than 30 iOS games available on the App Store and women over the age of 30 make up 75 percent of players.

The approval process takes longer than a typical app approval, likely weighing the amount of games against the subscription price of the application. The publisher is also working on an Android version of the application and company officials are targeting the first quarter of 2012 for launch. The concept of this application is very similar to the OnLive service that streams PC games to players. This allows players without access to the latest gaming hardware to play recently released PC games like Batman: Arkham City and Saints Row: The Third.

The iPhone App Store is finally home to a few emulators. For folks not into gaming, an emulator is software that allows you to run code from another platform. In this case, we are talking about emulators that let you play titles from retro game consoles (such as the Game Boy Advance) by taking the code installed on hardware (like a cartridge) and letting it run via apps on non-native machines (such as iPhones and iPads).

It seems fans have kept their eyes on this landmark development. Soon after its release, the Delta emulator app climbed to the top of the App Store download charts in 35 countries. An iPad app is already on its way. The momentum continued with the release of the Gamma emulator for PlayStation 1 titles. And last week, PPSSPP – arguably the best mobile emulator out there – landed on the App Store.

Delta emulator changes logo after Adobe lawsuit threats — but just barely

Delta is a popular iOS game emulator, but it ran into a small problem with its logo recently. The app developer claims that Adobe threatened legal action against it if it didn't change the logo, so it did -- by doing the bare minimum.

The latest update, 1.5.4, released on May 17, and the version history notes on the Apple App Store highlight the change. While the update also added a "revised context menu for games," the big thing is clearly the "new icon to avoid legal trouble."

Epic still plans to bring its Games Store to iOS and Android this year

Epic Games affirmed its commitment to bringing the Epic Games Store to iOS and Android before the end of 2024 during its State of Unreal presentation at GDC 2024.

Steve Allison, Epic Games Store general manager, explained that the mobile version of the Epic Games Store will feature Fortnite, as well as games from "a selection of third-party partners who have expressed interest in joining us when we launch." Like the PC version of the storefront, developers who release games on the mobile version of the Epic Games Store will have 88/12 base revenue share and Unreal Engine royalties waived.
