BioWare is closing, and the next Mass Effect is going with it

The closure ends more than three decades of RPG history and follows years of troubled releases.

Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare after more than three decades, bringing the curtain down on the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. EA also canceled the next Mass Effect in early development, and the closure is part of a wider restructuring that will reportedly eliminate around 400 jobs across EA.

Roughly 50 of those positions are reportedly at BioWare, and EA is also closing the studio’s Edmonton workspace. BioWare confirmed the news in its own farewell message, thanking the developers and players who helped build its games over the past 30 years.

What went wrong at BioWare?

BioWare’s legacy is difficult to overstate, but its last few major releases never managed to recreate the run that made the studio famous. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) arrived to a much colder reception than the original trilogy, while Anthem (2021) became one of EA’s more infamous live-service misfires.

Its final major release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024), did little to reverse the situation. EA said the game reached around 1.5 million players during its launch quarter, nearly 50% below the company’s expectations. BioWare was subsequently cut down to a much smaller team focused primarily on the next Mass Effect.Considering that trajectory, the closure doesn’t come out of nowhere, even if seeing the BioWare name disappear is still difficult because of how much of modern RPG history the studio helped create.

EA is cutting deeper

BioWare is only one part of EA’s latest restructuring. The publisher is cutting roughly 400 jobs, equal to about 3% of its workforce, while also reducing teams elsewhere and reshuffling development priorities.

EA says it will continue investing in Apex Legends, Marvel’s Iron Man, the next Star Wars Jedi, and future Battlefield projects. Respawn and DICE are also being brought together for another project, while development priorities across The Sims and Skate are being narrowed.

Modern Warfare 4 brings Call of Duty back to its glory days. I hope the streak lives.
Infinity Ward’s latest campaign goes back to Call of Duty’s roots and recaptures what made me a fan more than a decade ago.

The Call of Duty franchise has held a special place in my heart ever since I played my first Black Ops game back in 2010. That game's campaign was something else, with twists and turns that culminated in a mind-blowing finale. We can all admit that compared to those older campaigns, the recent CODs have been lackluster at best, and a complete and utter disappointment at worst. The reboot of Modern Warfare did give me some hope, as the first two installments were actually quite good, but the third game left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wasn’t exactly expecting much from Modern Warfare 4.

After recently finishing the campaign, I can say that this installment is nothing like the recent releases and instead feels closer to the franchise’s roots. For the first time in a long while, the campaign comes across as well-crafted rather than rushed to hit a release date. It arrives three years after MW3, and you can see exactly where all that time went. It seems the studio finally made listening to player feedback a priority.

It’s turning into a pretty good time to be a Monster Hunter fan who plays on a phone. Capcom has confirmed that Monster Hunter Outlanders will launch on Android and iOS on October 29, giving the series a new mobile-first game just as Monster Hunter Rise is also preparing to make the jump to smartphones through Netflix.

Outlanders is being developed by Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studio Group under license and supervision from Capcom. Unlike Rise, which appears to be the full console and PC game adapted for mobile, Outlanders is a free-to-play survival hunting game made specifically for phones.
