Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may not bring back Treyarch‘s Zombies mode, but the new Survival component of Spec Ops offers a similar sort of experience. You and one other person — just one, no four-player co-op here, sadly — fight together as wave after increasingly difficult wave of enemy forces flood into the map with just one purpose in mind: killing you. Scattered around the map are shops where you can exchange points earned from kills for weapons, ammo, equipment and air support.
E3 attendees got a chance to put their hands on the mode, which throws everything from standard grunt soldiers to armored juggernauts to dogs strapped with C4 at you in its attempt to ruin your day. Needless to say, Spec Ops Survival is a fun time. Today you get your first look at it too, thanks to a new trailer shared by Activision social media manager Dan Amrich on his website.
The aforementioned exploding dogs are there (a mode highlight), as are brief snatches of gameplay pulled from various maps. As you can see, pretty much the full range of tools is available in Survival. You might notice “Delta Squad” among the air support options. This is a cool purchase; buy it to call in an airdrop of friendly soldiers that will stick close and help you keep the fight going. The only time limit on them is their lifespan, which could be incredibly short if you don’t work as a team.
