CD Projekt Red not in talks with Microsoft to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from Xbox

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red says it is not in talks with Microsoft about removing the game from the Xbox marketplace. The announcement comes after Sony’s unprecedented decision to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.

According to a statement sent to Reuters, CD Projekt Red chief executive officer Adam Kicinski says there are no current discussions about removing the game from the Microsoft Store. “We are not in such discussions with Microsoft at the moment,” says Kicinski.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the game won’t be removed, but it does mean that Microsoft is unlikely to follow Sony’s lead right away. According to CD Projekt Red, the decision to remove the game from the PlayStation Store came after discussions between the two companies.

“Following our discussion with PlayStation, a decision was made to temporarily suspend digital distribution of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation Store,” the company tweeted. “We are working hard to bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to PlayStation Store as soon as possible.”

It’s unclear from the statement if the Sony removal was a mutual decision between the two parties, but it does clarify that CD Projekt Red was aware that it was happening and actively discussed it with Sony. It’s likely that a similar discussion would take place before Microsoft takes any action.

Cyberpunk 2077’s launch is troubling for CD Projekt Red. Despite positive early sales, the company’s founders have reportedly lost $1 billion in wealth following the game’s release. The studio has come under fire for hiding the state of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game ahead of launch. In our review, we noted that the game was “littered with bugs” and advised our readers to avoid the last-gen editions of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty fixes my biggest problems with the base game
V rides a motorcycle while shooting at a mech in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, I so desperately wanted to love it. I was enamored with its intricate open-world design, which featured an impressive level of verticality, but it was hard to ever get fully immersed due to its slew of launch problems. Pair that with a lore-heavy story that was filled with cyber-talk and I often found myself feeling lost in Night City -- and not in the good way I want from an open-world game.
