Dead Space 2 Prequel to be Released Online Later This Year

EA has announced that a prequel for the upcoming survival-horror sci-fi game is on the way, and playing it will reward you with unlockables for use in Dead Space 2.

In Dead Space 2, you once again play as Isaac Clarke. After surviving the events on aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, Clarke awakes on a heavily populated space station called the “Sprawl” that is in the midst of a Necromorph infection. The prequel will explain how the outbreak first began.

Don’t expect just an expansion pack for the game, though. Dead Space Ignition will feature an interactive comic-style story that features three hacking mini games: Hardware Crack, Trace Routine and System Override, rather than the third-person action of the original game. The game will offer four endings with a “choose your own adventure” narrative that allows multiple story paths. Beating the game also unlocks rewards, including an exclusive suit that your character can use in Dead Space 2.

Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2,”Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer on the Dead Space franchise said in a press release. “The interactive comic-style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, and will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers.”

No word on price or an exact release date, other than fall 2010. Dead Space 2 will be released by EA on January 25, 2011.
