Doctor Who Adventure games return this month

Now that the season six (of the new series) has concluded, Doctor Who fans will have to wait until Christmas for the next TV episode. But for those that can’t get enough, the BBC has you covered.

Following the success of the first “season” of the Doctor Who Adventure Games, which featured four original episodic games starring Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, the first episode of the second season will be available on BBC’s official page, on October 31.

The first episode will be titled “The Gunpowder Plot,” and have the Doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves battling two old Doctor Who enemies in 1605 London, even as Guy Fawkes begins his plans to destroy Parliament.

The first episode is listed as a free download, but that is likely specifically for British users. The previous episodes were also free for British users, but cost everyone else a few dollars. When all four episodes had been released, the set cost just $13, and has since dropped even more in price.

Amazon announced its August Prime Gaming lineup on Thursday, and it's bringing some Square Enix classics. One such title is the cyberpunk RPG Deux Ex: Mankind Divided, which might scratch that stealth, crawling through vents itch.

Deus Ex is one of the more well-known cyberpunk video game franchises thanks to its innovative immersive sim mechanics. Players can approach obstacles and goals in various ways, from stealth to straight-up combat, from hacking and lock-picking to looting weapons from enemies.

What’s new in August 2024: 7 upcoming games to play this month

As we approach the start of fall and the beginning of the holiday season, the number of high-profile games released begins to go up. The AAA games that want to beat other fall titles to the punch oftentimes come out in August, while several indie games launch as it's their last chance to get some time in the limelight before a crowded fall. Last year, August even brought us the release of eventual Game of the Year winner Baldur's Gate 3.

In 2024, plenty of noteworthy games are coming out as well. Seven in particular stand out to me as ones everyone should be keeping an eye on. I've included a more comprehensive list of the games launching this month at the end of the article as well.

This has been a particularly great year for puzzle games. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes and the recent remake of Riven offer up some mind-bending puzzles to solve, while games like Isles of Sea and Sky and Mars After Midnight find an innovative gameplay conceit and explore the concept to its fullest. The latter type of puzzle game I described tends to be more appealing to me, and a new game launching this week checked off all the right boxes for me. Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure from developer Furniture & Mattress is coming to PC, PlayStation, and Switch on July 25, but you can play it on mobile at no extra charge if you're a Netflix subscriber.

Arranger is a grid-based puzzle game where the world is made up of tiles, and players slide them around as they move. It's one of those genius gameplay concepts that has existed in bits and pieces in other games, but has never been explored to its fullest like this before. Arranger does just that while telling a coming-of-age story that emotionally ties back into that gameplay mechanic. It's my favorite puzzle game in a year that has already been outstanding for the genre, and a must-play for fans of the genre.
Putting the right pieces into place
Arranger creates the perfect setup for a game where players must arrange and move tiles. It's a coming-of-age story about a girl named Jemma who was abandoned and left to grow up in a village when she was younger. Unlike the people around her, she can see and move the world, which is split up into floor tiles. That causes issues. Everyone in her hometown seems to want her to leave, and she does so after accidentally awakening some static, a mysterious, controlling substance, in a cave right outside of town. Throughout Arranger, Jemma explores the outside world and learns more about her origins and why this static has overtaken the world.
