Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is this year’s can’t-miss Cyber Monday game deal

Cyber Monday Deal Vegeta in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
Bandai Namco Entertainment
This story is part of Digital Trends' Cyber Monday coverage 2024

It’s rare for a licensed video game to feel like the ultimate adaptation of the franchise it’s based on. I’ve seen it happen before with 2005’s Star Wars: Battlefront II and Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. This year, Dragon Ball finally got that treatment when Bandai Namco revived the Budokai Tenkaichi series with Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. This bombastic 3D fighter embraces everything that makes Dragon Ball special and is all the better for it. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero normally retails for $70, but this Cyber Monday you can find it discounted by 29% on Amazon and pick it up for just $50.

When I played Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero at Summer Game Fest earlier this year, I suspected it could be the ultimate Dragon Ball sandbox. I was relieved upon its release to see that this was truly the case. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a 3D fighter with a massive 182-character roster of iconic Dragon Ball characters (and forms of them). Players can construct teams of up to five characters and then duke it out across a variety of locations from the Dragon Ball series.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero provides players with all the action figures and play sets they would want, and then lets them freely mash them all together in explosive fights. It’s exhilarating to fly around the battlefield as Goku, pull off a powerful Kamehameha, and watch as entire buildings or cliffsides collapse as the opponent is knocked back to them. Shonen franchises like Dragon Ball are typically very over-the-top, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero wholeheartedly embraces its maximalist design.

It’s also more approachable than the 2D fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ, which is equally pretty but a lot more technical to learn. Any Dragon Ball fan can easily pick up and get the hang of Sparking! Zero. Considering it has modes where players can construct their own match scenarios or change what happened during important moments in the series’ history, Sparking! Zero leans into its sandbox nature as well.

If you’ve ever considered yourself a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise, you need to pick this game up. It’s unlikely we’ll ever get another Dragon Ball game with as many playable characters and attention to detail as Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. This is the first time we’ve seen its price drop under $50, so it makes sense to pick the game up this Cyber Monday.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The biggest gaming news of 2024: Concord flops, Palworld vs. Nintendo, and more
A pal aiming a gun in Palworld.

2024 was a rough year for the game industry. It was dominated by layoffs, significant strategic shifts from some of the biggest companies in the industry, and gigantic live service flops that demonstrated just how hard that space is to break into. In last year's iteration of this article, I wrote that it felt like I was covering a "video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs." That certainly proved to be true.

That's not to say it was all dour. Some fantastic games were released, with some surprise viral successes like Palworld and Black Myth: Wukong showing how the right games since have the potential to resonate with millions of players. The video game industry is hurting, though, and looking toward 2025, the launch of Nintendo Switch's successor and Grand Theft Auto VI will have to do a lot of heavy lifting to get the industry out of this rut. These news stories shaped the video game industry's tumultuous 2024.

Half-Life jumps to over 5,000 concurrent players thanks to a brutal new mod
Half-Life 3

Half-Life has its fair share of gore and horror elements, but it was never the splatterhouse experience some shooters can be. Of course, part of that was due to graphical limitations in 1998; trying to go overboard with gore just looked silly. A new fan mod changes that, though, as Brutal Half-Life will take you on a much bloodier, more violent experience.

Players have flocked back to the classic first-person shooter since the mod's release, with player counts reaching more than 5,000 concurrent players in the last 24 hours. At the time of this writing, there were more than 4,400 players online at once -- a big jump from the 2,000 concurrent players the game maintains on average, according to PCGamesN.

One of 2024’s most underrated games is free on Epic Games Store right now
A prison guard shoots aliens in Redacted.

Epic Games Store's holiday giveaway continues today with Redacted, a roguelike-spinoff of The Callisto Protocol that takes heavy inspiration from Hades and other similar titles. It has a totally different vibe than its source material, though, and it's a game that you can get a lot of enjoyment out of -- especially for free.

Redacted is a roguelike where players must fight their way through Black Iron Prison to the single remaining escape pod, finding loot and skills along the way. It has strong progression systems, as Redacted lets players increase their character level and upgrades between each run, but it adds a bit of a twist: You're racing more than just hordes of enemies.
