Featuring an array of characters and creatures from Square Enix’s long-running Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest Heroes opts out of the traditional turn-based gameplay of its ancestors and places players in the middle of sprawling battlefields filled with hundreds of enemy characters. Players head into battle alongside AI-controlled partner characters in a bid to capture enemy outposts and clear out invading armies.

Dragon Quest Heroes is developed by Omega Force, creator of the popular brawlers Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. The company has produced multiple beat-’em-ups based on licensed properties in recent years, including Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage and One Piece: Pirate Warriors.

Omega Force recently partnered with Nintendo in developing Hyrule Warriors, an over-the-top Wii U brawler inspired by the Legend of Zelda franchise. Dragon Quest Heroes follows suit with settings and narrative content adapted from Square Enix’s RPG series.

The Steam version of Dragon Quest Heroes includes eleven Slime Weapons previously released as DLC for the PlayStation 4 edition. Also included are two bonus maps not featured in the game’s original console release.

Dragon Quest Heroes promises strategy-oriented gameplay in addition to its brawling mechanics, allowing players to level up their party members to earn new combat skills. Monsters defeated in battle can also be enlisted and deployed to fight alongside the player, expanding the game’s tactical options.

Dragon Quest Heroes will launch digitally via Steam for Windows PCs on December 3rd.

RPGs aren’t always the most kid-friendly experience. They can be filled with complicated combat systems, massive difficulty spikes, and long run-times that can make them feel insurmountably long. While series like Pokémon cracked the code, making the genre more approachable for players of all ages, most young children aren’t likely to pick up something like Tales of Arise.

Dragon Quest Treasures Erik and Mia

Square Enix has released a new gameplay trailer for Dragon Quest Treasures, a spin-off that features younger versions of siblings Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It gives us the first in-depth look at what playing this game is really like.

In Dragon Quest Treasures, Erik and Mia can capture monsters and utilize their abilities both in battle and out of it. They have powerful skills that can help defeat enemies when summoned during the game's action-oriented battles, and they can also be used to make big jumps and glide to different locations in the game. As Erik and Mia are whisked away to the land of Draconia, they'll find treasure all across the region and establish a home base. The treasure they find can be appraised, and as they find more valuable loot, their rank increases.
