Flight Simulator To Go?

Microsoft’s Flight Simulator might be the longest-running computer game series ever, originating in 1982. But the question is how much longer it might last.

Microsoft has laid off the people at its Aces studio, the team behind the popular game, leaving Flight Sim fans wondering whether their favorite game will be around much longer.

According to the BBC, Microsoft has stated that it’s “committed” to the series, but others aren’t so sure. Dermot Stapleton, director of Just Flight, which publishes add-ons for the game, told the BBC:

"It’s the end of the line for their in-house development studio, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the line for the game.”

"All Microsoft did was name a group of developers working on the game Aces Studio and now, as they’ve laid them and a load of other developers off, they have been somewhat hoisted on their own petard.”

"My guess is that Microsoft will now license the code to a third party developer and then cross that "cash bridge" when they come to it."

However, the general agreement is that the latest edition, Flight Simulator X, still has a shelf life of four to five years, so there’s still time for the game to be rescued.

The idea of a Blizzard-made, StarCraft-focused shooter has been floating around since the first announcement of StarCraft: Ghost in 2002, but the project's subsequent closure seemed to firmly close the coffin. When Blizzard shut down their next attempt in 2019 to focus on Overwatch 2, fans all but gave up — but an IGN interview with Jason Schreier has caused that ember of hope to flare once again. Third time's the charm?

In the interview, Schreier says, "StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard." He mentions a project focused on creating a shooter set inside the StarCraft universe, although he does point out that it could very well be canceled like the first two attempts.

Wii cult classic MySims feels right at home on Nintendo Switch
A house is customized in MySims: Cozy Bundle.

Last weekend, I was at a wedding when I struck up a conversation with a stranger. When she asked what I did for work and I mentioned I wrote about video games for a living, she was eager to tell me about her favorite games. A personal favorite of hers that I wasn’t expecting to hear? MySims. The somewhat obscure spinoff had a short life in the Nintendo Wii era, delivering a more approachable Sims experience built for casual audiences.

Lucky for my new wedding pal, MySims is making a surprise comeback this year with MySims: Cozy Bundle. The re-release packages up both the original MySims and the fantasy-driven MySims Kingdom with a few modern touches. I went hands-on with the package at a Nintendo holiday preview event, where I got a taste of how these cult classics have been reimagined for Nintendo Switch. Though not much has changed, there are two welcome -- and much needed -- adjustments that fans will appreciate.
