Fortnite Fortnitemares challenge guide: How to become a shadow

It’s the spookiest time of the year, meaning many games are hosting seasonal events, including Fortnite. This year’s timed event, Fortnitemares 2020: Midas’ Revengefind, features a host of new content, including new, festive challenges to complete. One of the challenges during the Halloween event requires you to become a shadow; however, the game doesn’t tell you how to do it, meaning you might be wondering how to go about completing the challenge. That’s where we come in.

Here, we’ll provide you with everything you need to know about shadows in Fortnite, from how to become one to what they can do.

The short answer to becoming a shadow is that you must be eliminated. Once you’ve died, you will respawn once as a shadow — aka, a spooky being that has the ability to seek revenge on other players who are still alive. Shadows sort of resemble spirits and include special powers such as an enhanced melee attack, the ability to leap to the top of buildings, and a scream move that detects nearby enemies. As a shadow, you’ll remain in the game until it ends or until another player eliminates you. Once you die as a shadow, you’re out of the game for good. It’s worth noting that shadows do not take fall damage, but can still be injured by explosives and attacks from other players, as well as the storm. Shadows start with 100 health and can heal by consuming various items around the map, including weapons.

For this challenge, all you need to do is spawn as a shadow. However, it’s recommended that you stack this with the challenge that requires you to detect other players. If you land at a high-traffic area like Stark Industries, you can easily detect 10 players within the same game. Simply use the scream attack by pressing L1 on PS4, LB on Xbox One, or L on Nintendo Switch to detect enemies nearby. Wait for it to recharge and do it again — you can detect the same player more than once to gain progress toward your goal. For best results, try staying just outside of the action so you don’t get eliminated before detecting 10 enemies.

As you can see in the video above, becoming a shadow is a fairly straightforward process. If you want to finish the challenge quickly, we advise landing at a busy area where you can let an enemy eliminate you right away. Afterward, spawn in and wreak havoc as a shadow. Do note that the Fortnitemares challenges will be available until November 2, 2020. After this, you won’t be able to complete the Halloween challenges anymore, so make sure you get them finished as soon as possible.

How to get the Godzilla skin in Fortnite
Fortnite Godzilla Evolved skin

Fortnite Chapter 6, Season 1 is officially out, and it brings a new Japanese-themed island, full of different biomes and a whopping 18 unique POIs, each proving to be a promising landing spot for players to choose from. The season also revamps the entire loot pool and adds new weapons such as Katanas, Hitscan guns, Oni Masks, and so on.

But something that was most well-received by players was this season's Battle Pass, which was full of original characters who are cosmetic outfits. However, despite that the new Fortnite season has also introduced a massive collab with the King of Monsters, Godzilla, where players can easily claim the skin and will soon witness the beast himself on the island.

If you're a long-time Fortnite player who can't stop asking where Tilted Towers disappeared to, this update is for you. Epic is bringing back Fortnite OG -- this time, for good. The game mode will cycle through the game's first season and let players revisit their favorite locations and loot just as they remember it from way back in 2017.

And when Epic Games says it's going back, it means all the way back. The mode will initially go through the seasons of Chapter 1, including all the loot changes and feature introductions. Think of it something like a crash course in the evolution of Fortnite; you can experience it just as players did back then and learn as you go. As a veteran of those early battle royale years, I can promise it was a vastly different experience than it is now.
