Greenpeace Takes On Console Makers

Greenpeace Takes On Console MakersGreenpeace, as everyone knows, wants to preserve the planet – this planet. But that hasn’t stopped them going into cyberspace fortheir quest. They’ve created a new site, Clash of the Consoles, where gamers can compare the e-waste of different consoles in terms of toxic chemicals, energy efficiency and recycling, andpersuade the big three – Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft – do to more.  "Game console manufacturers are lagging way behind the makers of mobile phones and PCs who have been reducing the toxic load of the products over the past year," said Zenia Al Hajj,Greenpeace International’s toxics campaigner. "Game consoles contain many of the same components as PCs so manufacturers can do a lot more."   In addition to seeing how their favoriteconsole matches up against competitors’ green credentials, visitors can also watch a special video featuring three iconic game characters – Sony’s Kratos, Microsoft’s MasterChief and Nintendo’s Mario.   Of the three big manufacturers, Nintendo has signed up to the European WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive that leaves responsibilityfor recycling their goods with manufacturers.   "We make sure that all of our products comply with European standards which we understand are the highest in the world," a companyspokesman told the BBC.

Let's rewind time and look at what defined every console generation from the first up to today.

If you want to look even further ahead, we can also tell you about every upcoming video game console and upcoming video game.

Xbox consoles will soon support external drives over 16TB
Gamer playing Xbox One with headset on.

Your Xbox console will soon be able to support external drives greater than 16TB, according to a recent Microsoft blog post. Members of the Xbox Update Preview will get access to the latest firmware that allows for truly massive external drives to be connected to your console. Previously, 16GB was the cap, but this latest version renders that a limitation off the past. The update will be tested first by those in the preview program and then it will be released to the public.

The Xbox Series S|X hasn't had the easiest journey in terms of storage. When the console first released, it was compatible only with officially-licensed internal drives, but no external games. Given the size of most games these days, 1TB of storage is enough for three or four games, if you're lucky. Titles like Halo: Master Chief Collection can reach nearly 140GB on their own.
