In what is proving to be a banner day for movie fans in terms of casting news, following the reports that Harrison Ford is returning to the role of Han Solo, Latino Review is also claiming that the role of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Phase Two movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, has been offered to Jason Momoa.
Momoa, who has played several high profile roles, including that of Kal Drogo in Game of Thrones, a starring role in Stargate Atlantis, and the title role in the reboot of Conan, was reportedly so impressive in his screen test for the character of Drax that Marvel officially offered him the part. Momoa’s reps countered, and negotiations are said to be underway.
Beware potential spoilers below surrounding the upcoming films, and last summer’s The Avengers.
It will be interesting to see how the character fits into the Marvel movie canon. In the comics, the character is originally a human named Arthur Douglas\ whose family is killed by Thanos. The being known as Kronos, Thanos’ grandfather, then puts Douglas’ soul in a new body capable of killing Thanos, and christens him Drax the Destoryer.
We know that Thanos will be a key figure in Marvel’s Phase Two films, and it fit for the space-born villain to appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy film before possibly moving on to The Avengers 2. It would also make sense to have Drax’s origin be rooted in the events of The Avengers, with his family dying due to the attack orchestrated by Thanos, thus adhering to the original Marvel origin, at least to a degree.
