Upcoming Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy is delayed until 2022. The date shift is the latest in a line of shake-ups for 2021’s gaming slate, signaling that this year’s gaming release calendar is in flux across the industry.
Hogwarts Legacy is a new open-world RPG game based on the Harry Potter series developed by Portkey Games. The title was first revealed during a Sony PlayStation 5 stream with a 2021 release window attached. The game’s Twitter account tweeted about the delay, confirming that it was being pushed back a year.
“We would like to thank fans from around the world on the tremendous reaction to the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy from our Portkey Games label. Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are giving the game the time it needs. Hogwarts Legacy will be released in 2022,” the tweet says.

The announce makes the game another addition to the long line of date changes hitting the gaming industry this year. Sony quietly reshuffled several games’ release windows in a CES video, while Ubisoft has pushed back several games citing the shift to working from home.
While Warner Bros. didn’t cite a reason for the delay, an unfortunate industry trend is starting to come into focus. In our 2021 gaming predictions, we noted that delays were likely imminent as studios adapted to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Hogwarts Legacy will release sometime next year on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
