Hyrule Field will run red with Moblin blood in Hyrule Warriors

The Wii U has an exciting exclusive coming in Nintendo and Tecmo Koei’s Hyrule Warriors, a spin-off of Tecmo Koei’s venerable, slaughter-simulating Dynasty Warriors series set in the world of The Legend of Zelda.

The long-running Tecmo Koei series, which has visited China (Dynasty Warriors), Japan (Samurai Warriors), and sci-fi anime (Dynasty Warriors: Gundam), casts you as a lone warrior sent into a button-mashing bloodbath against hordes of enemies–it’s a soothing, mindless kind of pleasure for when you want quantity over quality in your foes.

Hyrule Warriors, first revealed last December, takes that action to the Zelda universe, letting you play as Link or Zelda’s bodyguard Impa (and others still to be confirmed) as they fight to rescue the incessantly-kidnapped princess from the evil sorceress Cia and her massive army. Link, Impa, and the other to-be-revealed characters each have their own sets of weapons and over-the-top special moves. The first trailer (below) indicated that Hyrule Warriors is only a working title, but Nintendo’s latest press release seems to confirm it as official.

Check out the gallery for a taste of the mayhem to come. The game is set for an August release in Japan, though the product page on Nintendo’s U.S. website also lists the game for a 2014 release.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity tips and tricks
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

The Nintendo Switch had one of the strongest launch titles of all time with Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This title reinvented a lot about one of the oldest franchises in gaming history and became a huge seller for the platform. That level of popularity brought in many new fans eager to get their hands on the next Zelda title.

While the wait for Breath of the Wild 2 goes on, Nintendo announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity as a prequel to the original Breath of the Wild. They obviously want to draw in fans of the original game to try out this new offering; however, the way this game plays may surprise you if you're not familiar with the Warriors style of gameplay. It may look like Breath of the Wild, but everything you learned playing that game won't help you in Age of Calamity. Here are the tips and tricks you need for this more action-packed Zelda experience.

3 reasons Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity isn’t your average spinoff
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

It’s been a quiet year for Nintendo Switch owners, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Paper Mario: The Origami King serving as the console’s only major, first-party releases in 2020. Fortunately, Nintendo may have an ace up its sleeve with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Like its Wii U predecessor, Age of Calamity is a Zelda-themed hack-and-slash game modeled after the Dynasty Warriors franchise (commonly referred to as a Musou game). On paper, it’s tempting to write it off as a novel side game meant to fill some dead air until the long-awaited Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel comes out. After all, the original Hyrule Warriors is a fun but inconsequential game that offers little more than entertaining fan service.
