In order for Jak to control his magic in Immortals of Aveum, he will need special equipment and gear. You get default equipment for wielding your red, blue, and green magic, but you're not stuck with the basics for the entire game. During the opening chapters, you will no doubt have collected some gold and essence, but not known what they do or how to use them. These are for upgrades and crafting, which is how you will keep up with the challenges of the Everwar.

How to upgrade and craft gear

While you are never told why you should, instinct alone will probably have you scooping up as much gold and essence as you can during the first three chapters of the game. That's good, because once you hit chapter 4, you can finally spend those materials to improve your equipment.

Step 1: Play the opening three chapters and collect as much gold and essence as possible.

Step 2: At the beginning of chapter 4, after speaking to the captain, look to the right of the gate to see the Forge.

Step 3: Interact with it to get a quick tutorial on how it works.

Step 4: Every item will cost gold and some amount of colored essence to craft. If you don't have enough, you can also dismantle old gear to recover some materials that way.

In the Forge, you are able to either craft brand-new pieces of equipment for each sigil, ring, and more, or upgrade the ones you currently have to increase damage and other stats. This isn't the only Forge in the game, and you can usually find them in all the hub areas. Simply look for the symbol of a Hammer on your map to locate one.

Immortals of Aveum gets a surprise delay following strong Summer Game Fest showing
A player blasts an enemy with magic spells in Immortals of Aveum.

Hot off the heels of its appearance at Summer Game Fest, EA and Ascendant Studios made the decision to delay Immortals of Aveum to August 22.
Immortals of Aveum, a single-player first-person shooter mainly centered around magic, was revealed at The Game Awards 2022. It re-emerged in April with that July 20 release date, which was reaffirmed during the game's appearance during an extended segment of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. Despite that, Ascendant Studios and EA announced today in a blog post that they need to push its release to August 22.
"The recent feedback to the game proves to us what we already felt: that Immortals of Aveum is something special," Ascendant Studios says. "In order to realize our full vision, we are going to take a few extra weeks, making our new launch date Tuesday, August 22nd. This will give us time to further polish the game, finish optimizing all platforms, and deliver a strong launch. We owe it to ourselves and to you to get this right."
Digital Trends tried the game at Summer Game Fest Play Days, and while we did enjoy it, we did notice some frame rate and performance issues. That isn't uncommon in prelaunch builds. Still, Ascendant Studios and EA likely want a little more time so the game can run well at release, avoiding a Cyberpunk 2077 or Redfall situation.
Immortals of Aveum will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 22. This new date places the shooter around titles like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Blasphemous 2, and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

Immortals of Aveum delivers on its ‘fantasy Call of Duty’ promise
A battlefield appears in Immortals of Aveum.

When Immortals of Aveum was announced earlier this year, the team at Ascendant Studios told me that it was hoping to create a fantasy version of Call of Duty. And at the time, it was a little hard to see that comparison. Though former Call of Duty developers worked on the upcoming EA Original, it was hard to see that series' DNA in what looked like a pretty fresh magic shooter, one that felt more on par with Ghostwire: Tokyo and Forspoken.

Immortals of Aveum applies Call of Duty’s action to a magic shooter
A character wields blue magic in Immortals of Aveum.

When Ascendant Studios set out to make its debut game, Immortals of Aveum, it had a strong pitch on its hands. The idea was to create a “first-person magic shooter” that took some of the basic ideas of Call of Duty and mapped it into a fantasy setting. Guns would become spells, helicopters were replaced with dragons. In a presentation revealing the title’s first gameplay, the team would double down on its inventive approach, saying that it’s the kind of game we haven’t seen in years.
