Luxor 2 Hits Xbox Live Arcade

When you think of ancient Egypt, you might think of the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the palace at Memphis, the Nile delta…or any number of contributions the society made to civilization. And if you don’t think of magical balls which must be destroyed before they obliterate pyramids…well, then, obviously, you need to spend some time with MumboJumbo‘s action puzzle game Luxor 2, now available for Xbox 360 owners on Xbox Live Arcade.

The original edition of Luxor was ranked the leading casual game of 2005; the followup Luxor 2 brings players 88 new levels where players can earn 15 power-ups (including the new “Lightning Storm” and “Pharaoh’s Dagger”), play through four difficulty levels, and take on thirteen bonus rounds to climb their way through a new 100-level player ranking system. The Xbox Live edition of Luxor 2 also features a new arcade-style game called the Pharaoh’s Challenge in which players only used the Pharaoh’ Dagger to eliminate those pesky menacing globes. Xbox Live fiends will also appreciate being able to earn up to 12 achievements and 200 Gamerscore points.

3 underrated Xbox Game Pass titles to play this weekend (May 31-June 2)

We're right on the precipice of June, which will be chock-full of new game announcements from every publisher. In fact, that wave already started with Sony's May 30 State of Play. Still, just because this time of year is mainly focused on video game announcements doesn't mean you shouldn't be playing anything new. If you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber in particular, there are three titles you can have a great time with this weekend.

For those excited about Until Dawn's PC and PS5 remake, I recommend you check out developer Supermassive Games' previous narrative title, which is actually available through Game Pass. The other two games are new to the service. One is a Soulslike that was nearly a decade in the making, but paid off that wait by being an impressive title that stands toe-to-toe with FromSoftware's work. The other is one of 2023's best games, a puzzler that will make you think more deeply about how people interact with each other.

Move over Hades 2. Another great roguelike just hit early access

2024 has been a great year for early access video games. Some of the year’s most popular titles, like Palworld and Manor Lords, released this way on Steam, delivering an entertaining experience that will be added to and improved over time. Just this month, Hades 2 surprise launched into early access and is shaping up to be just as enjoyable as its predecessor. Now, another excellent early access roguelike has arrived: The Rogue Prince of Persia.

Announced last month at the Triple-I Initiative Showcase, this game is an action-platformer roguelike developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind much of Dead Cells' post-launch support. It also has the full backing of Ubisoft, who owns the Prince of Persia franchise, making this a somewhat unusual move for the Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry publisher. This risky project paid off because, while there is still obviously some room for improvement, The Rogue Prince of Persia is shaping up to be the perfect successor to Dead Cells.
What works
The Rogue Prince of Persia follows a prince who emboldened the Huns to attack Persia. He can’t die, though, as every time he does, he gets sent back in time by his bola. From there, the Prince goes on run after run, fighting the Huns throughout Persia in order to stop them and get home. It’s a premise fitting of a roguelike, as it means the game stars a character who regrets his actions but has to see the impact of them over and over again.

You’re going to want a great Xbox headset for Hellblade 2. Try this one

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is finally here, giving Xbox Series X owners the system's most impressive technical feat to date. The dark sequel is getting some mixed reviews due to its limited gameplay, but most reviewers seem to agree that its visuals are astonishing. It's biggest highlight, though, is its audio -- which should come as no surprise if you're familiar with the first game. When the makers of Hellblade 2 recommend you put on some headphones to play it, that's not something to be taken lightly. You're going to want a great audio solution for this one.

Like the first game, Hellblade 2 makes serious use of binaural audio to represent its protagonist's mental state. Senua is living with psychosis and constantly hears voices in her head that tear her in different directions. That's reflected in the audio design, as voices ping on all sides to disorient players. While 3D audio on the PlayStation 5 has been hyped up as one of its defining features this generation, Hellblade 2 gives Xbox Series X the most convincing use of that tech yet.
