Mario Strikers Charged Kicks Off On Wii

Nintendo has let loose another sports-based title for its popular Wii gaming console, this time in the form of Mario Strikers Charged. This soccer-based title features Mario, Luigi, and other well-known Nintendo characters in a super-charged game which utilizes the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers—plus, Mario Strikers Charged offers online gaming which lets players take on opponents from around the world.

"Mario Strikers Charged incorporates unique Wii controls such as flicking the Wii Remote to tackle the ball from your opponent or using it to block shots on the goal," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior VP of marketing and corporate communications, in a release. "There’s no better way to keep a game challenging and fun than to invite more people to join the action. With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, we’re creating a real community where players at any experience level can take part in the fun."

Mario Strikers Charged introduces nine new stadiums along with a plethora of new characters, each of whom have their own special abilities and power moves. Players can create their own teams by mixing and matching captains and sidekicks, and then master Striker Challenges (or the tournament-style Road to Striker Cup) to unlock new elements and cheats. Players can also challenge other gamers online, with participants ranged using a positive-structured points system which resets to zero every week…and let’s not forget the game’s special hazards: earthquakes, firestorms, shockwaves, and other "otherworldly" perils.

Mario Strikers Charged is rated E10+ for by the ESRB; it’s available now for a suggested price of $49.99.

Mario and his team striking a pose.

Mario and friends (and enemies) are no strangers to picking up just about any sport there is and putting a friendly and chaotic spin on the experience. Unlike more realistic sports games, which focus mostly on matches, maybe some challenge modes, and multiplayer, Mario sports games have all attempted to add in some sort of progression to make playing alone a bit more fun. Some games have full-on campaigns, while Mario Strikers: Battle League has a variety of cups you can progress through for new rewards, also unlocking new cups and modes in the process.

Mario Strikers: Battle League is an amazing return to one of the most "hardcore" Mario sports games. This new entry continues to push the sport of soccer to new levels, including a revamped stat and gear system for each character. All characters have different stat values across strength, speed, shooting, passing, and technique that make them fit different roles on the field better. However, you can also equip each character with four different gear pieces that further augment those stats to either increase their natural strengths or make up for deficiencies.

Mario wears many hats (sometimes literally). While his main profession is the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, that doesn't stop this Italian plumber from having plenty of hobbies, such as kart racing and participating in just about every sport under the sun. It isn't uncommon to find Mario teeing off for a round of golf, swinging his racket in a tennis match, or even competing at the Olympics. One sport that he's only dabbled in, despite being the most popular one in the world, is soccer, aka football. We've only gotten the chance to lace up our cleats with the cast of the Mushroom Kingdom in two prior games: Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube and Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii.

These soccer games, despite being a mostly noncontact sport, were some of the most brutal and serious depictions we've seen of Mario and company. Because of the more family-friendly image Nintendo likes to present Mario with, many gave up hope of this series ever coming back. That only made the announcement of the sequel, Mario Strikers: Battle League, now 15 years later, all the more exciting. This is a much different style of sports game than other Mario titles, and an even greater departure from other soccer games, so newcomers have a lot to learn and look forward to. Before you strap on your shin guards, here's everything we know about Mario Strikers: Battle League.
