2K Sports has recently made a strong case that its NBA basketball franchise is the best sports series out there right now. Of course personal preference will slant this opinion, but in terms of smooth gameplay, plentiful content, and just general fun, the NBA 2K series does not fail to deliver.

With the Wii U arriving in North America today, it brings with it several ports of successful games that were recently released on other platforms, integrating the Wii U’s unique features, specifically the GamePad. But with any port of a title to brand new hardware, there are unavoidable sacrifices that have to be made due to the unfamiliarity developers face with the new hardware, and development cycles that are at the mercy of the hardware manufacturer who is certain to keep the specifics of that new hardware as secret as possible for as long as possible to avoid leaks. It is a problem all new hardware faces, and the Wii U is no exception.

That results in games that tend to be a bit rough around the edges, and in many cases the titles are forced to make major cuts in the features. EA Sports is perhaps the biggest victim of this, having cut entire game modes from its Madden and FIFA ports, but they are not alone. And yet somehow, NBA 2K13 managed to avoid this pitfall completely.

There are a few minor things missing – you can’t buy virtual currency online and the Virgin competitions are absent, but neither feature really makes much of a difference to the game itself. The lack of virtual currency makes it tougher to bulk up your team in “MyTeam” mode, but saving your money and forcing you to play the game naturally may not be a bad thing.

The inclusion of the GamePad is handled well. During a standard game, the touch screen becomes your coaching tool, allowing you to scan through several options like strategy, quick plays, and substitution options, which you can change with a button press. The substitutions have always been a thing you have to  learn to embrace on the 360/PS3 versions, while this makes it easy and intuitive. This is helped by the ability to check the fatigue, performance, and stress levels of players in the new “Gatorade Biometric Scan” by touching that player during a game. You can do that thanks to one of the Wii U’s best features, the GamePad’s ability to show the full game on the touchscreen, making it possible to play NBA 2K13 without the TV on.

This ability to play on the GamePad is also available in the MyPlayer mode, but the coaching options have been swapped for the ability to track your player’s progress. As with the coaching tools, when you hit the icon on the touchscreen, the GamePad will display information on your shot selection, and generally inundate you with stats. It’s neat addition, but will likely end up being just eye candy more than a helpful tool for most.

But despite the inclusion of the GamePad and the full complement of game features, there were a few cuts made to ensure the timely arrival of the game on the Wii U. A bit of the much-hyped Jay-Z production additions have been shaved, and little things like the music video that proceeded each game has been removed, although this is a very minor quibble.

A larger issue is the graphics, which are still good, but not as crisp as the 360/PS3 version. They move well enough, but there is just a slight dullness to them in comparison – but only in comparison. If you haven’t played NBA 2K13 on the other systems, and maybe even NBA 2K12 as well, then you won’t notice the downgrade.

The game is also polluted by the occasional glitch. More than once while saving, my game froze and forced me to back out into the Wii U Menu. These glitches seem to all be relegated to the menus and not the gameplay though, which makes them forgivable, if frustrating.

The controls also take a bit of getting used to on the GamePad. They were designed for a smaller control that encourage the combination of the analog sticks and shoulder buttons, which is relatively complex. You’ll have to relearn how you play. You can always use the Pro Controller, but that will cost you the coaching tools. It isn’t a big deal, but it’s something you’ll have to get used to.

Conclusion

2K Sports’ NBA 2K13 is easily the best launch day sports title for the Wii U. The inclusion of the GamePad makes the game easier to use than ever before, at least once you acclimate yourself to the bulkier GamePad.

It is still a port though, and like all launch day ports sacrifices had to be made. The bugs may be worked out with a patch or two, but the graphical downgrade, although slight, is a shame when you consider the power of the Wii U. Still, 2K Sports are definitely on the right track, and NBA 2K13, regardless of which system you play it on, is still the king of the sports titles.

At Gamescom 2023, Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World gave another update on its highly anticipated first-person shooter horror game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. It did push the game back until next year, but we also got our best look yet at gameplay in a new trailer.

The trailer begins with the player emerging from a sewer into the game's irradiated wasteland. We see the player slowly move around a few different environments before shooting at a supernatural enemy in a facility. The trailer only gets more intense from there as we see the player kit out their gun before taking on a variety of enemies, from humans to dogs to more disgusting-looking supernatural enemies. At the end of the trailer, we learn that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will now launch in the first quarter of 2024 and that preorders are finally open.
This long-awaited sequel to a PC cult classic has had a very turbulent development. It was originally supposed to be released in April 2022, but has gotten delayed multiple times due to development challenges and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Some of its developers are fighting with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, while others moved to the Czech Republic to finish the game. On top of all of that, GSC Game World has faced multiple cyberattacks and game leaks it attributes to Russia.

Despite all of the challenges GSC Game World has faced in the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, the game seems to be shaping up nicely. This new trailer is full of intense action and very atmospheric moments, and previews from people playing the game at Gamescom 2023 are positive. Hopefully, GSC Game World can take this positive momentum and meet its new release window.

You can get NBA 2K23 and more with PS Plus this June

The three games that make up PlayStation Plus Essential's June lineup have been revealed. There are any major console exclusives or no releases included; instead, there's NBA 2K23, a Jurassic Park tie-in title, and an indie game inspired by classic samurai films.

NBA 2K23 needs little introduction, as it's the latest entry in 2K's long-running, annualized basketball video game series. This latest entry stands out from the ones that came before by deepening the controls an AI further, as well as adding a Jordan Challenge mode that chronicles Michael Jordan's career. Beware of some pretty intrusive microtransactions, though. 
Also available this month is Jurassic World Evolution 2, a theme park management game that swaps out roller coasters and other festivities for dinosaur-related attractions. The management genre is a surprisingly great fit for the Jurassic Park IP, and this game even provides a bit of story context to fill in the gap between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion.
Finally, there's Trek to Yomi, a very cinematic indie game. It's stylized like a classic black-and-white samurai action movie, which makes sense as it's telling a revenge story about a pupil trying to avenge their dying master. If you didn't play this game through Game Pass, it's now available on a Sony subscription service as well.
This certainly isn't the most exciting game lineup, but it still provides a wide variety of gaming experiences. NBA 2K23, Jurassic World Evolution 2, and Trek to Yomi will be available through PlayStation Plus from June 6 until July 3. Make sure you download May's PS Plus games before then too.

Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition blocked in the U.K. over cloud concerns

The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has blocked Microsoft's attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard because of its potential negative impact on cloud gaming. 
Since January 2022, Xbox parent company Microsoft has been trying to acquire Activision Blizzard, the video game publisher behind franchises like Call of Duty, Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch. The companies have run into lots of regulatory hurdles, though, especially from the CMA and FTC, the latter of which is currently suing Microsoft. While it seemed like the CMA was inching towards approving the deal, the U.K. regulator ultimately decided to block it due to its potential impact on the fledgling cloud gaming market.

"Microsoft has a strong position in cloud gaming services and the evidence available to the CMA showed that Microsoft would find it commercially beneficial to make Activision’s games exclusive to its own cloud gaming service," a press release from the CMA explains. " Allowing Microsoft to take such a strong position in the cloud gaming market just as it begins to grow rapidly would risk undermining the innovation that is crucial to the development of these opportunities."
Over the past couple of months, Microsoft has attempted to ease these cloud gaming concerns by making deals with companies like Nvidia and EE. The CMA did not think these remedies were enough, though, saying that Microsoft's efforts didn't account for enough potential business models, cloud gaming services that don't use Windows, and how the deal could take "the dynamism and creativity of competition" away from the U.K.'s cloud gaming market.
Obviously, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft aren't too happy about this decision. Activision Blizzard directly attacks the CMA in a statement provided to Digital Trends, saying that the "report contradicts the ambitions of the U.K. to become an attractive country to build technology businesses," before calling the country's economic prospects "dire" and threatening that it will reconsider its plans for growth in that country. 
Microsoft's statement from Vice Chair and President Brad Smith is a bit more measured, saying that Microsoft is "fully committed to this acquisition and will appeal." Citing the deals the company has already made to bring Call of Duty to more platforms, Smith says that the decision shows "a flawed understanding of this market and the way the relevant cloud technology actually works."

Microsoft has a lot of work cut out for itself if it still wants to force this deal through after pressure from the FTC and CMA. As the appeals process could take up to nine months or more, it seems unlikely that the acquisition meets its original June 2023 deadline; it's probable we'll be following this fight to acquire Activision Blizzard for the rest of the year.
