The most iconic meme game is coming to Nintendo Switch Online this month

Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier membership just got some legendary Sega Genesis games for its final June 2022 update. One of those titles happens to be Zero Wing: a game many have seen without even knowing, thanks to the very iconic, “All your base are belong to us,” meme.

SEGA Genesis - June 2022 Game Updates - Nintendo Switch Online

Zero Wing is a classic side-scrolling arcade shooter developed by Toaplan. The game not only was a success in arcades but enjoyed positive reception on the Sega Genesis as well. While those gave the game a name, it gained a whole new following in the early 2000s due to a roughly translated cutscene that used the phrase “All your base are belong to us.” It became one of the internet’s first major memes.

A meme isn’t the only reason to get excited about these new Sega Expansion Pack additions. Joining Zero Wing is Comix Zone, yet another classic game the Genesis is known for. This beat em’ up puts you in control of comic artist, Sketch Turner, and throws you into the world of his comic creations. Using his move set, pet rat, dynamite, and other weapons that can be found along the way, you’re tasked with kicking comic butt and escaping the paperback world.

Next is Mega Man: The Wily Wars, another game that’s earned an iconic status due to its place in gaming culture. This compilation combines Genesis remakes of Mega Man 1-3, but it originally never gained a North American release. This addition marks the second time it’s been officially released in the States with the first being its feature on the Genesis Mini.

The final Genesis game that’s been added to Nintendo Switch Online is Target Earth, originally released as Assault Suit Leynos in Japan. This run-and-gun pseudo platformer is the first in the Assault Suit series.

All four games are available now if you’re subscribed to Switch Online’s Expansion Pack.

My favorite Switch game of the year is already 25% off
Monkeys smash a robot in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble.

It's been a peculiar year for the Nintendo Switch. The system has gotten a new exclusive every month this year, but few heavy hitters. Remakes and ports have padded out 2024, while smaller experiments like Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition have filled the cracks in between. There's few games this year that would rank on my list of all-time favorite Switch exclusives -- except for one.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble is that good, and if you don't believe me, you can try it for yourself right now. Sega's platformer is currently on sale during Nintendo's summer Play Together sale, which cuts the price of several multiplayer games. Despite just launching in June, you can now get Banana Rumble for $37, which is a 25% discount.

This free Nintendo Switch game is messy, but endearingly weird
Denpa Men run around a town in The New Denpa Men.

The Nintendo Switch just got a new free-to-play exclusive, and it's a big deal for a very niche but dedicated fanbase. The New Denpa Men is the latest entry in developer Genius Sonority's Denpa Men series. If you haven't heard of that before, there's good reason. The series debuted on Nintendo 3DS and has had several entries since, spanning out to mobile, but its most recent installments were exclusive to Japan. The Switch release brings the quirky RPG back west, which marks an exciting return for its cult following.

Or it should have been exciting, at least. As it stands, The New Denpa Men is a bit of a mess at launch. A laughable English localization, a frustrating online requirement, and some pesky microtransactions already have fans torn. While those are all issues that have bugged me during my first few hours with the release, I'm still finding some endearingly weird charm in the RPG. It feels like a return to a different era of Nintendo, where the company's hardware gimmicks led to some welcome creative swings.

Nintendo is coming after Switch modders once again
A person plays Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.

Nintendo is no stranger to lawsuits these days, and it's filed two more, as reported Tuesday. One is against the owner of a company who allegedly sold modded Switches, while the other concerns the moderator of a subreddit where users could learn how to play pirated games.

According to TorrentFreak, which had copies of both complaints filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, Nintendo is suing Modded Hardware and its owner, Ryan "Homebrew Homie" Daly, for selling Mod Chips, modded Switch consoles, and a memory card that lets people play pirated games. Nintendo's lawyer wrote in the suit that this caused "substantial and irreparable" harm to the console giant. It's seeking damages for copyright infringement, along with other charges such as "trafficking in circumvention devices."
