Nintendo has shared details of the second batch of Amiibo figurines, which are set for release in early 2015. It’s a lineup that includes an assortment of Super Smash Bros. characters, like Meta Knight, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Lucario.

The second wave of figures arrive in Japan on January 22, 2015, with three more to follow in February. Nintendo hasn’t shared any information about what its second-wave Amiibo release plans are outside of Japan.

The following figures have been announced for the second wave:

  • Lucario
  • Rosalina
  • Bowser
  • Toon Link
  • Sheik
  • Ike
  • Meta Knight
  • King Dedede

Three more are set to follow:

  • Shulk
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Megaman

The first Amiibos arrive in the U.S. on November 21, coinciding with the stateside release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U. The figures contain NFC chips similar to those in Skylanders and Disney Infinity toys, which record data that can be used across games.

In Smash Bros. the figures store AI-controlled avatars of their character that can be trained and customized as a teammate, sparring partner, and autonomous fighter to do battle with your friends’ Amiibos. Nintendo has not yet announced how the figures integrate with other games, but have promised that in the future they will work with titles like Mario Kart 8.

Three years out from its initial launch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will receive its final character adjustments in its next update. The game's last update, Version 13, included character adjustments and added its final DLC character, Sora, to its roster.

Nintendo is officially sponsoring a Smash Bros tournament series

In a somewhat historic first, Nintendo is partnering with Panda Global on an officially licensed series of Super Smash Bros. esports tournaments. There will be official tournaments for Super Smash Bros Ultimate and, shockingly, GameCube classic Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The relationship between Nintendo and the Smash Bros competitive community has never been a smooth one. Throughout the years, the company has called for many cease and desist orders against various community events, giving it a bad image in the eyes of the tournament faithful. That rocky past makes this inaugural licensed tournament circuit even more monumental.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been out for around two-and-a-half years now, and in that time players have gotten a whopping 11 new characters to play as. Adding that many characters into the game is a monumental task in itself, but when you consider where they all came from, it's more impressive. The list of DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate covers a mishmash of games and genres, including Joker from Persona 5, Banjo & Kazooie, Minecraft's Steve and Alex, and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.
