Pokémon Legends Arceus: How to get a Shiny Ponyta

Certain Pokémon have always been harder to find and catch than others. In some cases, they are only available at very specific instances of the game or perhaps only obtainable through unusual methods like trading. Being a game centered around every single Pokémon, Pokémon Legends: Arceus continues the series' tradition of including hundreds of different monsters to spend your time hunting for. They also introduced some new forms exclusive to this version, but the rarest of all also make a return and are just as difficult to track down as ever.

Shiny Pokémon might not seem like a big deal to new players. All they technically are is a normal Pokémon with a different color scheme. They don't have any different stats, special abilities, or anything else that makes them worth seeking out aside from their extraordinary rarity. Every Pokémon game gives you a small percentage chance of the Pokémon you find being Shiny, typically around 1 in 4,000 for the modern editions of the game, so it's possible a normal player will never even encounter one during their journey through Pokémon Legends: Arceus. That is, unless, you follow this handy guide to show you a guaranteed way to get a Shiny Ponyta.

How to catch a Shiny Ponyta

Before you can start the specific request that lets you find a Shiny Ponyta in Pokémon Legends: Arcues, you will first need to progress through the main story up until you defeat the first Frenzied Noble Pokémon, Kleavor, in the mission called The Frenzy of the Lord of the Woods.

Step 1: Head to the Request Board inside the Galaxy hall. Find request #19, called "A Peculiar Ponyta," and accept it.

Step 2: Travel to the west bridge in Jubilife Village to find Yota to learn the details about the request, specifically that you need to go to the Horseshoe Plains in the Obsidian Fieldlands.

Step 3: Make your way to the Horseshoe Plains and begin scanning the area for a Ponyta with a blue fire mane rather than the typical red or orange. There will always be one present for this request.

Step 4: Either sneak up and try to stealth catch the Ponyta without battling or start the encounter. If you do battle, be warned that they are very likely to run away. If this happens, don't worry. You can reset the quest, spawning a new Shiny Ponyta, by simply going back to Jubilife Village and then back to the Horseshoe Plains.

And that's all there is to it! Completing the request lets you keep your brand new, and likely first, Shiny Pokémon, plus five Razz Berries to top it all off.

After The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it’s time for Zelda Maker

We almost had a The Legend of Zelda video game where players could create their own dungeons. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which launches later this week, lets players obtain "echoes" of items and enemies, which they can explore, fight, and solve puzzles with. A new Ask the Developer interview from Nintendo revealed that this gameplay idea came from the original concept for Echoes of Wisdom: an "edit dungeon" concept where "players could create their own The Legend of Zelda gameplay," according to Grezzo game director Satoshi Terada.

Ultimately, the team went in a different direction after recognizing the potential of the echoes mechanic created for the "edit dungeon" concept. While I'm still quite excited to play Echoes of Wisdom, part of me is disappointed that we aren't getting a The Legend of Zelda dungeon maker game. It's OK that Echoes of Wisdom went in a different direction, but this is an idea Nintendo should certainly return to in the future.

It's not uncommon for game developers to experiment with different gameplay concepts or ideas early on in development to find what works. Terada explained that in one of these early concepts, "Link could copy and paste various objects, such as doors and candlesticks, to create original dungeons." Later in the Ask the Developer interview, Nintendo director Tomomi Sano said that this "concept involved copying various things during your adventure out on the game field, then bringing them back to create a dungeon in a dedicated place."

Three phones running Pokemon TCG Pocket.

While the mainstream popularity of the Pokémon Trading Card Game has ebbed and flowed since its launch in 1998, it has always enjoyed a cult following. That's earned it a spot at the top of the genre alongside games like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh. It's grown in popularity and complexity in the past 25 years, evolving from a simple card game that lived alongside the anime and mainline Pokémon video games to having its own obsessive fanbase, competitive scene, and world championship events.

Battling has always been at the core of the Pokémon world, but another aspect of the game has always reigned supreme: catching them all. And that's exactly what Creatures and The Pokémon Company wants to get back to with its new mobile game.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: release date, trailers, gameplay, and more
Key art for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Every new Zelda game feels like an event, and yet Nintendo managed to keep a new mainline entry hidden almost all the way up until its release. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is not the same size and scale as the 3D entries like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom -- it's actually the long-awaited continuation of Zelda's 2D titles. The last game we got in this style was 2019's The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which was a remake of the 1993 Game Boy title.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom caught the attention of everyone at the June Nintendo Direct where it was announced for many reasons, chief among them being Zelda taking on the starring role instead of Link. The perspective and style might look familiar, but there's a lot to learn about Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom before you jump back into Hyrule.
Release date
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will be released on September 26, 2024.
