If the upcoming release date for Id Software’s Rage is circled on your calendar, you might want to do a little more prep before the much-anticipated shooter hits shelves — like cleaning out some space on your hard drive.
According to Id rep Tom Willits, Rage will be a three-disc release for Xbox 360, and require an 8 GB installation on Playstation 3. An installation to the 360’s hard drive will require 21-22 GB of free space.
After thanking Sony for allowing the oversized installation requirement, Willits told Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry why the game needs so much precious hard-drive real estate.
“What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level,” he said. “What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it’s just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it’s all the same.”
That’s not the case when it comes to Microsoft’s console, however, and Willits acknowledged that 360 gamers with limited hard-drive space might have to make some tough decisions.
“We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don’t need to install all three discs,” he explained. “If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two.”
“You can go back if you want to but there’s really no reason to,” he said of the potential need to reinstall prior discs at a later point. “You don’t really need to install the multiplayer disc if you’re really tight on hard disk space.”
Rage is scheduled to hit shelves October 4.
