Shadowrun Hits Store Shelves

Shadowrun Hits Store Shelves

The first game to support Microsoft’s “Games for Windows – Live” thrust has hit store shelves in the form of Shadowrun, a multiplayer first-person shooter developed by FASA Studio that combines magic and modern weaponry with strategy and real-time action. Shadowrun is available for both Xbox 360 and Windows Vista, and enables cross-platform multiplayer gaming with folks who have Gold accounts on either Xbox Live or Games for Windows – Live. We doubt the game will settle any debates on which is the better gaming platform (console versus PC), but at least no adherents of both camps will be able to shoot it out amongst themselves.

In Shadowrun, players take on the role of a human, elf, dwarf, or troll in a futuristic version of Santos, Brazil…and, of course, its nearby ancient Ziggurat. The first-person shooter includes nine unique maps, three map variations, and six training chapters which lets players get their own mix of high-tech, mystical mumbo-jumbo, and modern firepower worked out by taking out AI opponents. Once they’re up and running, players can take on AI bots at for levels of difficulty on every map and in every game type, or go online to challenge other Shadowrun players—and, of course, talk trash.

This pixelated Western might be the sleeper hit of the year
A giant tree stands in the desert in Arco.

Plenty of video games have tried to create their own spin on the American Western. Red Dead Redemption is the most famous example, but you can also look to games like Call of Juarez, Gun, or Desperados. Even if you've played all of those games, I'm willing to bet you've still never played a Western like Arco.

Published by Panic, Arco is a pixelated adventure that flips the genre on its head in several ways. Players don't control a grizzled cowboy blasting their way through the American frontier. Instead, the story follows a cast of Indigenous characters in early Mesoamerica fighting to protect their land and loved ones from colonizers. It's the total role reversal that the genre needs, and it's handled as creatively as possible.

Fortnite is cutting down on item FOMO with new store change
The TMNT Fortnite skins. We have all four turtles in fighting poses in front of a purple background.

Fortnite practically runs on FOMO (fear of missing out). if you don't get the item you want in a battle pass, you'll most likely never get the chance again. So if you wanted to run around as Goku and missed when the excellent skin was available? Tough luck.

But that policy is changing soon. Developer Epic Games announced in a blog post that items could be made available in the Shop 18 months after their respective battle passes expired at the least. That includes alt styles, which might also come to the Shop, along with licensed outfits you may have missed out on. This also applies to items that may have been unlocked after a battle pass launch.

Steam hit Balatro is getting a big free update next year
A list of Jokers stacked together from Balatro.

Balatro, the roguelike poker indie game that captured the attention of many players earlier this year, isn't stopping any time soon. In a Tuesday announcement, developer LocalThunk revealed that a big free update is coming next year.

The update will bring "new ideas and strategies" to the game, and it'll all come out across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, and Switch. This is the first of three announcements publisher Playstack and LocalThunk have planned for now through September, but the two are keeping their cards close to the chest. There isn't any word on what the other announcements might entail, but they'll be revealed at "undisclosed times."
