Sony Announces Mad Max

While we aren’t enormous fans of cinematic scenes from games without any gameplay footage, the hair on the back of our necks raised when we were presented with a desert wasteland featuring a collapsed body lying in the heat. An old car roars into frame, and a leather jacketed, double-barreled shotgun toting, spike-haired individual steps out. As the individual on the ground begs for his life, the driver lines up his shot and then …

Nothing. Cracking open the barrel, he realizes that he only has one shot left out of two. He reluctantly climbs back into his ride and roars off, giving the craggy crawler on the game a chance to live again. That is, until the car flies back into frame and flattens him. Yep, it’s Mad Max. The game is coming from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and will feature an exclusive Road Warrior Survival Kit for the PlayStation 4. No word on if Mel Gibson will be voicing Max or not, and of course we don’t know what the game looks like at all but it’s hard not to get excited about Mad Max.

In case you’ve never seen a Mad Max movie, don’t fret. The entire Mad Max trilogy was just released on Blu-ray last week in a fairly sweet, steelboxed edition with tons of extras. You’ve got time to study up.

Concord studio shuts down as Sony sunsets the troubled shooter
Two characters face off in Concord.

Sony announced that it's officially sunsetting Concord and closing its developer Firewalk Studios after a disastrous launch that led to it taking the game offline after just two weeks.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which acquired Firewalk in 2023, revealed in an email sent out to employees on Tuesday that it's shutting down the studio, along with mobile developer Neon Koi, in order to "strengthen SIE's Studio Business." That means two studios acquired by Sony over the past two years have been closed.

Bungie gives an update on Marathon following layoffs
The thief peeking around a corner holding a gun in Marathon concept art.

Bungie has been mostly quiet about its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, which still has a 2025 release window. In a developer update released on Monday, the game director confirmed that it's still in the works, but it's too early to share more details.

In the nearly 10-minute video, which you can watch below, director Joe Ziegler showed off two new pieces of concept art -- one for a character code-named "Thief" (pictured above) and another foe a character code-named "Stealth." Ziegler didn't provide any information on these Runners, but from the names, you can guess what kind of playstyles they cater to.

Horizon developers are ‘done’ with their original franchise, Killzone

Guerrilla Games has been working on the Horizon series for years, and it shows no signs of slowing down, which is bad news for fans of Killzone, its initial franchise. In a new interview, a Guerrilla developer said the studio was "done" with the hyper-dark shooter series when it pivoted to making Horizon Zero Dawn.

"We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. It was, by choice, the opposite of Killzone," art director Roy Postma told The Washington Post.
