Sony Reveals This Year’s PlayStation Lineup

Sony Reveals This Year

It’s that time of year again: Looking to drive hype for its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable systems, Sony has lifted the veil on upcoming games for 2008 and early 2009, giving gamers a glimpse of what to expect in the year to come. The list of 15 titles includes some much-anticipated updates to existing franchises as well as some relative newcomers.

A new HD version of the racing game wipEout will be among the rejuvenated old titles to launch for the PlayStation 3 this summer, bringing full 1080p gameplay and eight-player multiplayer gaming to the system. A new PixelJunk title, dubbed Eden, will also appear this summer. The MotorStorm franchise will get an update with Motorstorm Pacific Rift in the fall, and the next iteration in the SOCOM series, SOCOM: US Navy Seals Confrontation, will launch on September 16. Resistance 2, a follow-up to the original PS3 launch title, will arrive in the fall. Much further in the future, in February 2009, a sequel to 2004’s Killzone will come out for PS3.

Newcomers to the system include Elefunk, a puzzle game set for release in summer, Siren: Blood Curse, a horror game set in Japan, also slated for summer, and LittleBigPlanet, a “creative gaming” title that allows players to create their own worlds, which will appear in October.

NBA 09 will span the PS3, PSP, and PS2 when it comes out in the fall, and the Buzz! trivia franchise will also receive versions spanning two systems: Buzz! Quiz TV for PS3 and Buzz! Master Quiz for PSP, both offering trivia across different categories such as music, movies, TV and sports.

Besides these carryovers from other systems, the PSP will also get two new exclusive titles from popular franchises. Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 will come out on June 3, bringing six new courses, and Secret Agent Clank will renew the Ratchet and Clank franchise by dumping the duo into a spy-themed adventure.

A PS5 DualSense controller.

It sounds like we're going to learn more about a next-generation PlayStation sooner rather than later.

In early 2024, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka told Bloomberg the following: "Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle." While she didn't outright say that a PlayStation 6 is in the works, we can assume that the company is already looking ahead at its next console.

Concord didn’t fail PlayStation. PlayStation failed Concord
A character wields a rocket launcher in Concord.

Ever since its disastrous launch, there’s a lot of discussion about how Concord failed for PlayStation. It's a fair conversation, but it's not the only one that needs to be had in order to understand how we got here. We can't ignore how PlayStation failed Concord and its developers.

Tuesday afternoon, Hermen Hulst announced that Concord, which was shut down two weeks after its launch earlier this summer, would not be coming back. On top of that, he explained that Sony was shutting down Concord developer Firewalk Studios and mobile game developer Neon Koi. He cites the move as “part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen SIE’s Studio Business.”
