Take-Two to Go It Alone

Earlier this year, über game publisher Electronic Arts made an unsolicited bid to take over Take-Two Interactive…just before it’s massively anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV was due to launch. Take-Two maintained that the offer wasn’t high enough, and despite EA extending the deadline Take-Two investors could take its cash (again, and again), after six months—and long after the GTA IV launch—EA finally walked away from its takeover dreams. At the time, Take-Two said it was still considering its options, and didn’t rule out a merger or partnership with EA…under the right terms.

Well, now Take-Two is done considering its options, and the company has decided to remain independent. Take-Two’s executives and board feels the best way they can make money—and deliver value to their shareholders—is to keep doing what they’ve been doing: develop and publish games independently and build its portfolio of game titles and franchises.

“We are strongly positioned creatively, financially, and competitively to benefit from the opportunities we see in the fastest growing segment of the entertainment industry,” said Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick in a statement. “Our management and outstanding and talented employees have maintained an unwavering focus on our products and our business through this lengthy strategic review process and we are confident in our prospects.”

Take-Two says it has no debt and $140 million in credit it can tap into, and plans to expand over a dozen wholly-owned brands in addition to the monster Grand Theft Auto franchise and the up-and-coming BioShock, which is currently prepping a sequel and getting ready for the Hollywood movie treatment.

I played the first two hours of Tales of the Shire, and I’m not won over yet
A hobbit in Tales of the Shire.

The farming and life sim genre is extraordinarily crowded as many developers try to chase the success of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Some are more successful than others. For example, August’s Fields of Mistria impressed in early access by sticking to the genre’s core conceit and creating a town full of villagers that you want to get to know better. Now, Weta Workshop is attempting to capitalize on this trend with a video game based on The Lord of the Rings.

In Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game, players control a Hobbit who Gandalf brings to the Hobbiton town of Bywater. From there, it’s up to players to familiarize themselves with and cook for the townsfolks, farm and forage for food, and raise the standing of the village. After playing its opening two hours, I'm finding some creative ideas in Tales of the Shire, but a lot of work will need to be done if it's going to rise to the top of a crowded genre.
A mixed stew
If you’ve played a life sim game before, the basics of Tales of the Shire won’t be that shocking. I found its opening hours to be more similar to a game like Fae Farm rather than Stardew Valley or Fields of Mistria. Most of the time is spent on meeting the villagers of Bywater rather than getting into the farming routine. While players have control over customizing how they farm, Tales of the Shire seems more interested in having players explore Bywater and cook for its residents.

Two Point Museum will let players create a Sonic-themed museum next March

Sega revealed that Two Point Museum will launch on March 4, 2025, but what's even more fascinating is its preorder bonus. Those who preorder the game early will gain access to lots of items based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series that they can decorate their museum with.

Two Point Museum was revealed last month ahead of Gamescom 2024. It builds upon the formula Two Point Hospital and Two Point Campus established as a comedic management sim where players have to run and curate several fictional museums. I went hands-on with the game and enjoyed what I played, as Two Point Museum already gave me a lot of tools to build out and customize my museum to my liking. Now, I'll be able to do that with items based on Sonic and Shadow.

Helldivers 2’s big update is already going over well with fans

Helldivers 2 got the big update players have been waiting for on Tuesday, addressing a litany of issues with balance and difficulty. And for the first time in a while, fans seem to be reacting positively to the game.

Patch 1.001.100 is a big aspect of Arrowhead Game Studios' 60-day plan to address feedback and build back some goodwill after a series of updates made the game too difficult for many players. It's a huge update, so we won't get into all the fixes, but the highlights include overhauls to 31 weapons, 11 stratagems, 15 enemies, the Helldivers themselves, and planet modifiers like heat and cold. There's also a new Galactic War map that displays the locations of important assets, and an emote wheel that allows players to equip four emotes at a time.
