The Medium delayed to January 2021 due to COVID-19 and, likely, Cyberpunk 2077

Upcoming Xbox console exclusive The Medium will be delayed by one month. The game will now launch on January 28, with developer Bloober Team citing COVID-19 and a competitive launch window, which now includes Cyberpunk 2077, as reasons.

A statement from the game’s Twitter account reads: “It wasn’t an easy choice to make, but one made due to the COVID-19 situation in Poland, as well as the current schedule of other games on the market.”

The first half is a familiar story for video games in 2020, which have seen major delays throughout the year as studios struggle with the ongoing pandemic.

Bloober Team’s concerns about the “current schedule of games” is especially notable. The game was originally slated to release on December 10. However, that’s now the same day Cyberpunk 2077  will launch following a last-minute delay that came after the game went gold. While the post doesn’t call Cyberpunk 2077 out by name, it is likely the game that the studio is citing.

The Medium’s delay is another setback for the launch of the Xbox Series X and Series S. The horror game is a console exclusive for the new systems, and its delay takes one of Microsoft’s few launch window games off the table this holiday season. The delay clears the runway for Cyberpunk 2077 in December, which launches on both new Xbox consoles and the PlayStation 5.

Bloober Team says it will continue to share details about the game in the meantime, and will use the extra development time “to add further polish, ensuring we deliver our innovative, genre-pushing vision of interactive psychological horror.”

One of Xbox’s only fall console exclusives, Warhammer 40K: Darktide, just got delayed
A team of players stands together in Warhammer 40K: Darktide.

Fatshark and Level Infinite announced the delay of the cooperative sci-fi shooter Warhammer 40K: Darktide. While it does have a new November 30 release date for PC, no new launch day for the Xbox Series X/S version was shared. As a result, Xbox may have just lost an important console exclusive during a year with a nearly barren Xbox Series X/S exclusive lineup.
The announcement was made via a tweet written by Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund. "Delaying a game is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions a developer faces and one we are not excited about making," Wahlund writes. "Still, we hope this speaks to our commitment to taking the time necessary and doing whatever it takes to get you the best possible game. While we have been humbled by the great feedback on the game so far, we also need more time to improve stability and performance, and to mature key systems. Each is critical to making sure we have the best possible experience for you, the players."
While Warhammer 40K: Darktide was originally going to launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 16, now just the PC version will arrive on November 30 with several technical tests happening ahead of launch. Wahlund says the Xbox Series X/S release "will launch shortly after PC, with a specific launch date to come."

As a result of this indefinite delay on console, we are no longer sure Warhammer 4oK: Darktide will release in 2022. If it still does, it'll just barely make it out in December 2022 to round out Xbox's 2022 exclusive lineup. If the Xbox Series X/S version of Warhammer 40K: Darktide does slip into 2023, that's even worse for Xbox. Following the delay of Redfall and Starfield, Xbox has been left with a paltry 2022 lineup.
After the release of Forza Horizon 5's Hot Wheels DLC and As Dusk Falls on July 19, the only Microsoft-published exclusive games we can expect throughout the rest of 2022 are the 1.0 launch of Grounded and medieval adventure game Pentiment. That puts a lot of pressure on third-party console exclusives like Warhammer 40K: Darktide to make Xbox's fall lineup compelling. Losing Warhammer 40K: Darktide would make a brutal 2022 even worse for Xbox exclusives as fans can only hope that titles like Scorn, Sommerville, and Slime Rancher 2 actually come out this year.
Warhammer 40K: Darktide will be released for PC on November 30.

Xbox delays mean 2022 is now the Nintendo Switch’s year
Person holding Nintendo Switch OLED.

Nintendo has had quite the year so far, and it’s starting to look like it’ll maintain that momentum through the end of 2022. With the company’s competitors delaying major holiday releases left and right, the runway has been cleared for Nintendo to blow past Sony and Microsoft despite doing so on a five-year-old console.

With Xbox exclusives Starfield and Redfall out of the picture, here's what the rest of 2022 is looking like for the three big game companies. Nintendo's clear, loaded release calendar has the company poised to dominate this holiday season.
Nintendo’s big year
Just in the first half of the year, Nintendo has released Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Triangle Strategy, Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, and Nintendo Switch Sports. All of these games have been positively received, so Nintendo is off to a good start already. And it seems like the second half of 2022 is going to be even better.
