The Witcher 3’s long-delayed current-gen update launches this December

As promised, CD Projekt Red will release the current-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition this year, on December 14. This update will go live across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and is free to anyone who already owns the game on previous-gen.

The current-gen version of The Witcher 3 has been in the works for quite some time, suffering multiple delays since its initial announcement in 2021. Thankfully, the game’s developer will make good on its promise to launch it in 2022.

This update comes with plenty of enhancements, including ray tracing, better load times, and even new content based on the hit Netflix series. It’s unclear what this new Netflix-inspired content is, but CD Projekt Red says more details will be revealed on the company’s Twitch channel this week.

Keep in mind, you’ll still be able to purchase the current-gen version if you don’t already own the game on previous-gen platforms. Otherwise, you’ll get to upgrade for free within the same family of systems (PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series). PC players will get to upgrade for free on December 14, as well.

Interestingly, the previous-gen version of The Witcher 3 on PS4 and Xbox One will also get an update at some point in the future. It will include enhancements, along with the aforementioned Netflix content — though CD Projekt has yet to reveal the release date for the last-gen update.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first launched for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2015, and later came to Nintendo Switch in 2019. It’s one of the best-reviewed games of the past decade, with critics praising its story, visuals, and open-world.

The current-gen edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will upgrade the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, will now launch in the fourth quarter of 2022 according to a tweet from developer CD Projekt Red.

This comes on the seventh anniversary of the original game's release in May 2015. It's still unclear when the current-gen version will launch, but we can expect it by the end of the year -- hopefully in time for the holidays.

The past year-and-a-half havs not been kind to Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The studio -- part of CD Projekt Group, a company that also owns the online games marketplace GOG -- faced enormous criticism with the release of Cyberpunk 2077 and has since been busy fixing the game. In the time since, the studio has faced setback after setback, with its announcements leaning more toward a project being delayed rather than good news for fans.

Outwardly though, the company is appearing to shake off the dust of Cyberpunk 2077. While its short-term ambitions are pointed exclusively at past releases, the studio has future plans. It's looking forward -- and in a big way. A recent earnings report from the company revealed that it's working on numerous unannounced projects, one of which is being co-developed by another studio, The Molasses Flood, and will be based on one of CD Projekt Red's franchises.
Flooding the pipeline
CD Projekt Red's current content plans seek to reinforce what the studio already has out there. Cyberpunk 2077 recently received a current-gen update and will get its first major story expansion next year. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also set to get its own current-gen update, though its release date has been postponed indefinitely following CD Projekt Red's decision to bring development in-house.

CD Projekt Red has announced that its current-gen port of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt will not be releasing any time soon. In a post on the game's Twitter account, the developer said that the game's port, which was supposed to come out during the second fiscal quarter of this year, has been postponed "until further notice." The game had earlier been delayed to this year.
