On this week’s show, Trends with Benefits welcomes pro gaming legend Thresh, A.K.A. Dennis Fong, A.K.A. the man who won John Carmack’s Ferrari at E3 1997. We get the lowdown on his inauspicious beginnings, early tales of Quake conquest, and the delicate matter of getting his prize Ferrari from Atlanta to California … without knowing how to drive stick.

We also discuss Fong’s latest venture Raptr, our favorite arcade games, Nintendo classics, and what happens when gaming meets virtual reality.

Joining Thresh for this week’s show are Digital Trends gaming writer Will Fulton, managing editor and reformed Quake addict Nick Mokey, and host Greg Nibler.

3 Xbox Game Pass games to play this Independence Day weekend (July 4-7)

It's Independence Day weekend, so you're probably looking for some games to play if you don't have to work this holiday weekend. If you're subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, the service offers plenty of games to choose from. This weekend, three titles from its catalog stand out as particularly fitting to play on this holiday weekend if you plan on spending more time on your Xbox or PC rather than outside with this time off.

The first is an indie game from Free Lives and Devolver Digital that satirizes the over-the-top, bombastic nature of both American patriotism and blockbuster movies. Next, there's a Fallout video game set around Washington, D.C., that you can check out if you're getting tired of playing Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Finally, I'm recommending a baseball game that's on Xbox Game Pass for those who'd rather play a game themselves than watch one on TV.

After the Xbox Games Showcase, play these Game Pass greats this weekend (June 14-16)

We're coming off a fantastic week for Xbox. Although this has been a rough year for the company and game reveals don't make up for all the developers Microsoft has laid off, the Xbox Games Showcase did feature lots of promising games and helped reaffirm the feeling that Xbox is here to stay in gaming. As I returned from Summer Game Fest and wondered which Xbox Game Pass games to recommend this weekend, I looked to games that will give you more context to some of the best announcements from 2024's Xbox Games Showcase.

One is a remaster of the first game in a hallmark Xbox franchise that's getting a prequel soon. After that, there's the Dragon Age game that you need to check out so you're all up to speed whenever Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches later this year. Finally, we have a retro first-person shooter from Rare that still holds up today, getting a revival by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics.
