Ubisoft discusses the challenges of fixing The Division

Tom Clancy’s The Division has now been available for almost two months, and while this has given players ample time to grow accustomed to the most minute statistics and plan their strategies for getting the best loot in the Dark Zone, it has also come with a laundry list of problems related to the game’s infrastructure. Ubisoft admits that it underestimated the time it would take for cheaters to exploit The Division‘s flaws, and in an interview with technical director Anders Holmquist, the company discussed the steps it is going to take to mitigate the damage.

The Division uses a network of dedicated servers that are located “all over the world,” in addition to data servers located in Montreal that keep track of your character’s statistics and progress. Holmquist describes the server as “authoritative,” as the user’s client is not responsible for generating loot drops or the majority of combat, but the system isn’t perfect.

“Proper server validation” has been a consistent problem for months. In an attempt to keep the game running more smoothly across a variety of internet connections, there are some things, such as fire rate, that are still being calculated by the user’s client, and this opens up the possibility for cheating.

“We have quite a lot of data on people cheating with fire rate right now. I think there will be some bans coming in the future,” Holmquist said.

It’s not all about catching cheaters, though. The Dark Zone experience is currently pretty lenient with hit detection, and lagging players can “hit” you even though you were already behind cover. Holmquist says that the code is currently “a bit too generous” with this, but it’s the same underlying issue: trying to make the experience smooth for every user, like you’d expect from a shooter, while also having the systems in place to make the game fair for everyone.

“We’re very aware of the problems that are there,” Holmquist says. “We’re fixing them. We know who’s cheating. They’re going to get banned.”

Can they fix the problems? In a blog post that has been making the rounds over the last few days, Glenn Fielder, who has been maintaining a blog on game development for more than a decade, paints a pretty grim picture. In the majority of other competitive shooters, “the server is the real game.” There’s little to no client-server validation taking place. Without this system being completely changed to make this all take place on the server instead of the client (and thus risk making the experience less smooth for slower internet connections), Fielder is doubtful the game can be fixed at all.

“I hope they have something up their sleeves,” Fielder says. “I hope they have a valid networking approach based around server-side checks that can address this issue in some way. But unfortunately, so far, all signs point to no.'”

Ubisoft is making some big, last-minute changes. The next game in the Assassin's Creed franchise has been pushed into next year, according to a statement the company published Wednesday, due in part to the lower-than-expected performance of Star Wars Outlaws.

Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is set in feudal Japan and has two playable protagonists, has been delayed from November 15, 2024, to February 14, 2025, to give the developers more time to "polish and refine the experience."

For many fans of looter-shooters, it's hard to find a series quite as compelling as The Division. With two successful games in the franchise already under its belt, Ubisoft is clearly aware that it's a meaningful part of its ever-expanding catalog, so it's unsurprising that it's hard at work on a third entry. With the advent of newer hardware and a heap of lessons learned from the first two games, The Division 3 is all but certain to land with a bang and further cement the franchise as one of Ubisoft's most beloved.

We know The Division 3 is in development at Massive Entertainment with Julian Gerighty as the executive producer. Beyond that, though, not much has been shared about what to expect from the game yet. Even so, here's everything we know about The Division 3.
Release date
The Division 3 does not currently have a release date. And since the game hasn't even received any trailer yet, it's safe to assume we probably won't see it until at least 2025 — though stranger things have happened.

There was plenty to see and do during the four hours I spent with Star Wars Outlaws at a recent preview event. The universe was at my fingertips, but my adventure was at its best when I could simply vibe. My most memorable moment came when walking into a dingy bar on Kijimi from The Rise of Skywalker and playing several rounds of Sabacc, only to walk back to my ship and find some loot to smuggle. It's such moments that sell the smuggler fantasy that Ubisoft is touting as the first open-world Star Wars video game.

Behind all of this, players have to balance their relationships with the five different Syndicates that rule the underworld of the Star Wars galaxy. While I still have questions about how this system will play out in the long term, as well as plenty of nitpicks, the relationship management adds to the sandbox feel of Ubisoft's sci-fi adventure. At its highest points, it feels like Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment is using Star Wars Outlaws to deliver a sci-fi answer to Red Dead Redemption.
Attention to detail
My lengthy Star Wars Outlaws preview began on Toshara, a new planet created by Ubisoft that was the first section of the game that opened up to players. It's here where I met the Pyke, Crimson Dawn, and Hutt syndicates and began forming relationships with each as Kay Vess. For the most part, doing so came through missions that had me exploring Toshara's open world on a speeder bike.
