Midway Games, Epic Games, and Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that the much-anticipated shoot-em-up title Unreal Tournament 3 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 video game console and the PC. The announcement is a feather in the cap of the PlayStation 3 console, which has been greeted by the gaming community with lackluster sales and which—so far—has failed to score a must-have title exclusive to the platform.
“We feel very confident that Unreal Tournament 3 will continue to deliver on Epic’s promise to gamers to develop only the highest quality titles using our cutting-edge Unreal Engine 3 technology,” said Mark Rein, Epic Games’ vice president and co-founder. “The game takes full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 3 system, and Unreal Tournament 3 will for the first time allow users to create robust user created content, known as ‘mods,’ on the PC version and play them on the PlayStation 3 system. We’re extremely excited about this and we feel this will bring a level of creativity, innovation and replayability not previously seen on home consoles.”
Due to ship in November, 2007, Unreal Tournament 3 will enable players to create many of their own game elements, including custom maps and game modes. Players will be able to engage in hyper-real first person action which takes full advantage of the Unreal Engine on both the PlayStation 3 and PC-based systems, and compete against AI-driven opponents on their own, or battle other human players online, all with a variety of futuristic weapons and vehicles.
