Warhammer 40,000 Comes to DS and PSP

Tabletop gamers have it good these days. Besides a new community site where they can meet up alongside computer gamers, they’re also getting a tabletop classic brought over to two systems that fit in a pocket. THQ announced Tuesday that the Warhammer 40,000 franchise is coming to the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Warhammer purists may scoff at a digital version of the game, but it will be turn-based like the original – just don’t expect to paint any figurines. Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command will allow gamers to control the elite Space Marines of the Ultramarines chapter to combat the forces of Chaos. There will be 13 missions in the single-player campaign, each tied to a continuous storyline.

Developers haven’t neglected the wireless capabilities of the systems or the social nature of the original game, either. A multiplayer mode is also included, allowing players to face off head-to-head, or team up for one of nine missions that can be completed cooperatively.

“Bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to handheld systems creates exciting new game play options for fans across the globe,” said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ, in a statement. “An all-new single-player storyline and the ability to battle head-to-head with anyone in the world make this an exciting addition to the Warhammer 40,000 library.”

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command is scheduled for a fall 2007 release in North America.
