Xbox Game Pass loses some horror greats, but gains a kid-friendly racing game

We’ve learned what games will come to Xbox Game Pass over the first half of this April, and leading the batch is Lego 2K Drive, a Lego racing game that’s a solid alternative to the Forza Horizon games that are also available on Microsoft’s subscription service.

Lego 2K Drive was released in May 2023 and is an enjoyable racing game where players can build their own Lego vehicles and race throughout several open worlds. It found the middle ground between the likes of Mario Kart and Forza Horizon and thrives in that space, even if the microtransactions can be a little aggressive for a game aimed at children. Playground Games has not yet confirmed if another Forza Horizon game is in the works at this time, so Xbox fans can play this game to fill that void until a new one is announced.

Other notable additions include the solid indie title Lil Gator Game and Harold Halibut, a claymation adventure game 14 years in the making. Here’s the full list of titles coming to Xbox Game Pass between today, April 2, and April 16, in chronological order.

  • Superhot: Mind Control Delete — April 2
  • Lego 2K Drive — April 3
  • Lil Gator Game — April 4
  • EA Sports PGA Tour — April 4
  • Kona — April 9
  • Botany Manor — April 9
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition — April 11

As usual, some games will also leave Xbox Game Pass mid-month. The biggest loss happening on April 15 is Back 4 Blood, a fun Left 4 Dead spiritual successor from Turtle Rock Studios and WB Games. This is the full list of games leaving the service on April 15:

  • Amnesia Collection
  • Amnesia: Rebirth
  • Back 4 Blood
  • Phantom Abyss

Astro Bot isn’t on Xbox, but you can play these great platformers on Game Pass
Raz runs on a colorful stage in Psychonauts 2.

Astro Bot is an undeniable win for PlayStation. It's not just a celebration of the brand and many of the franchises that built it into what it is today, but it's also a fantastic 3D platformer that uses the PS5 hardware in creative ways. As a Sony-published game spotlighting the history of the company, it's obviously not on Xbox. In fact, I've seen a lot of people lamenting that Xbox does not have a lot of good platformers in the wake of Astro Bot's well-received launch.

Although it's accurate to say that Xbox doesn't have an exclusive quite like Astro Bot, a few excellent 3D platformers are available on Xbox Game Pass. Many of them are even IP now owned by Microsoft or outright published by Xbox Game Studios. If you have an Xbox console and Game Pass subscription and feel like you're missing out on Astro Bot, consider playing one of these games to make that feeling a little less painful.

3 games leaving Xbox Game Pass to play this weekend (September 6-8)
Character posing for Payday 3 promo art.

While Age of Mythology: Retold launched on Xbox Game Pass on September 4, several games are also leaving the service. In just over a week, five games will be removed from Xbox Game Pass. This happens around every 15 days, so there's nothing out of the ordinary here. Still, some notable games are leaving the service on September 15, so you should check them out before they are gone. I want to highlight three of those games, ranging from a clever indie to a tense multiplayer game. Check them out this weekend, and if you really enjoy them, you can buy them at a 20% discount while they're still in Xbox Game Pass.
Payday 3

Payday 3 is the latest entry in Starbreeze's long-running first-person shooter series where players work together to pull off heists. For example, you'll work with others to scope out a bank before donning masks, holding people hostage, stealing money, and making a quick escape from the police. It's a tense multiplayer game where failure is likely, and I've had a good time with it. Admittedly, Payday 3 doesn't quite live up to its predecessor, but as something to play free of charge on Xbox Game Pass, it's entertaining enough. The PC and Xbox Series X/S versions of Payday 3 leave Xbox Game Pass on September 15. After that, the game will still be available for purchase on those platforms and PlayStation 5.

Play these 3 games before they leave Xbox Game Pass this weekend (August 23-25)
A robot's face pulls apart as it screams in Atomic Heart.

While Xbox Game Pass is still getting plenty of new games, some titles do leave the service every 15 days. At the end of August, we're losing some particularly good ones. If you're a fan of sports games, fighting games, or narrative-driven first-person shooters, then you'll want to play at least one of these games this weekend.

Don't fret that these games are leaving Xbox Game Pass, though. Xbox will be releasing Age of Mythology: Retold, Ara: History Untold, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Towerborne, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Xbox Game Pass this fall.
