Xbox’s recent restructuring may have claimed another project, but Fallout fans could be getting something far more exciting in return. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft-owned Obsidian Entertainment has cancelled its planned Avowed sequel and is instead shifting its focus to a brand-new Fallout game. The project will reportedly be led by Josh Sawyer, the director behind the critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, making it one of the most exciting Fallout developments in years.

A familiar name returns to Fallout

Sawyer is no stranger to the wasteland. He directed Fallout: New Vegas, widely regarded by many fans as one of the best entries in the franchise. Bloomberg reports that he had previously been leading an original RPG with similar themes and structure to Fallout, but that project has now been replaced by an official Fallout title as part of Xbox’s broader strategy shift.

The report also says Bethesda Game Studios will collaborate with Obsidian on the new project. That’s notable because Bethesda has largely been occupied with other games since releasing Fallout 76 in 2018, leaving the main Fallout series without a brand-new entry for years. Meanwhile, Fallout 76 has continued to receive updates and has grown to more than 23 million players, while Amazon’s Fallout TV series is currently filming its third season.

Avowed takes the hit

The new Fallout reportedly comes at the expense of another RPG. Bloomberg says Obsidian has cancelled its planned sequel to Avowed, despite development progressing well and an announcement reportedly being planned within the next year. The sequel ultimately didn’t align with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s strategy of investing more heavily in Microsoft’s biggest franchises.

While that’s disappointing news for Avowed fans, Fallout supporters have plenty to look forward to. If Bloomberg’s report proves accurate, it would mark the first time since New Vegas that Josh Sawyer has officially returned to the Fallout universe. Given the original game’s enduring popularity, that’s likely to be the biggest takeaway from Xbox’s latest shake-up.

Criterion says Burnout isn’t forgotten… but that’s exactly what worries me
Battlefield's success makes EA's decision easy to understand, but it also leaves a huge hole in arcade racing.
Burnout Paradise Remastered Featured

As part of its recent interview with IGN, Criterion reflected on its 30-year journey, from Burnout and Need for Speed to helping revive Battlefield. The studio made it clear that Burnout remains an important part of its identity, but it also acknowledged that its future now lies firmly with Battlefield. Fittingly, Criterion's new 30th anniversary logo proudly carries the tagline: "Criterion: A Battlefield Studio."

On paper, that makes perfect sense. Battlefield 6 has already become one of EA's biggest success stories in years. It revived a franchise many had written off, delivered the biggest launch in Battlefield history, and reminded everyone why the series was once Call of Duty's fiercest rival. As a Battlefield fan, I genuinely couldn't be happier. As a Burnout fan, though? That realization stings a little.

Person, Face, Head

Don’t Starve Together is finally coming to iOS and Android on July 21, and this one has me genuinely excited. I have spent a lot of time with the PC version, and it remains one of my favorite multiplayer survival sandbox games because of how quickly a normal session can turn into complete chaos.

Klei Entertainment’s gloomy, strange, and unforgiving survival game is being ported to mobile by Playdigious. Preorders and preregistrations are live now, and the game is available at a 10 percent launch discount, bringing the price down to $8.99 from the usual $9.99.

New study finds gaming doesn’t rot your brain, but compulsive habits can
Your 100-hour save file may be innocent after all
Man gaming on a PC Computer

For years, parents have believed that long playtime hours are harming their teenagers' brains. A new study has suggested otherwise. It seems like the number of hours spent gaming isn't what's causing the real harm. Researchers found that the number of hours adolescents spent gaming carried small positive associations with certain cognitive abilities.

The warning signs emerged more clearly among teenagers showing symptoms of compulsive or dysregulated gaming. So if someone faces loss of control while gaming, can't deny the craving, uses deception to continue playing despite the negative consequences, they are the ones actually in danger.
