CinemaNow Inks Deal with Macrovision

Online digital video service CinemaNow has inked a deal with Macrovision intended to make it easier for device manufacturers to build support for CinemaNow’s services into products like digital television sets, network-attached storage, and set-top boxes. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“CinemaNow is dedicated to providing access to great entertainment wherever our customer is, in the living room or on the go,” said CinemaNow CEO Curt Marvis, in a statement. “Making sure our service is readily available on as many devices as possible is part of that mission, and that’s why we’re collaborating with Macrovision.”

CinemaNow offers movies, TV shows, and music videos for sale and rental via several platforms and devices, including Microsoft’s Xbox Live service, portable media players from Archos and Samsung, as well as HP’s Media Smart TVs. Partnering with Macrovision’s Connected Platform Technology gives CinemaNow a way into even more consumer electronics devices—particularly since Macrovision’s All Media Guide content database service and anti-piracy solutions are already in high demand from CE manufacturers. Plus, Macrovision just laid out roughly $2.8 billion in stock and cash to acquire Gemstar-TV Guide.

Nvidia GeForce Now on LG TVs.

LG has announced that it is the first smart TV maker to debut a native app for Nvidia's GeForce Now online streaming gaming platform. The GeForce Now app will be available as a beta test on select 2021 TVs, including 4K OLED, QNED mini-LED, and NanoCell TV models in 80 markets globally. LG says the full list of compatible TVs will be released at a later date.

With the GeForce Now app installed, users will have access to 35 free-to-play games if they own a compatible controller, with no additional hardware required. Games include Rocket League, Destiny 2, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Crysis Remastered Trilogy. Games can be played at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, though there has been some recent controversy over this as Nvidia has admitted to capping some games at lower frame rates.
