Disney+ goes live in 16 markets in the Middle East and North Africa

The reports of the demise of streaming have been greatly exaggerated. That’s true, anyway, for Disney+, which today just fired up 16 new markets across the Middle East and North Africa in what’s known in the biz as the “MENA” region.

Just like elsewhere, that means full access to thousands of movies and series from Disney, Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and National Geographic — along with the “general entertainment” that’s part of the “Star” brand. (Think Hulu, more or less, outside the U.S.) That means subscribers will have access to the best movies on Disney+, the best series on Disney+ — and everything else that comes along with that general entertainment category.

Pricing varies a little from country to country but is still in line with what you’ll see in the rest of the world. Subscribers will have access to up to four streams at once and unlimited downloads on up to 10 devices. Child profiles are available, too, and there can be up to seven profiles attached to a single account.

Here’s the full list of countries that now have access to Disney+, along with their monthly and annual prices:

  • Algeria (399.99/3998.99 DZD)
  • Bahrain ($8.99/$88.99 U.S.)
  • Egypt (49.99/498.99 EGP)
  • Iraq (4999.99/49998.99 IQD)
  • Jordan (2.99/28.99 JOD)
  • Kuwait ($8.99/$88.99 U.S.)
  • Lebanon ($4.49/$43 U.S.)
  • Libya ($2.99/$28.99 U.S.)
  • Morocco (33.99/328.99 MAD)
  • Oman ($8.99/$88.99 U.S.)
  • Palestine (6.99/68.99 USD)
  • Qatar (29.99/298.99 QAR)
  • Saudi Arabia (29.99/298.99 SAR)
  • Tunisia ($3.49/$33.99 U.S.)
  • UAE (29.99/298.99 AED)
  • Yemen (2.99/28.99 USD)

Adding new markets should only increase subscription numbers for Disney+. As of April 2, 2022, the service had 44.4 million subscribers in the U.S., and 43.2 million internationally, for a total of 87.6 million. And that’s before you count the 50.1 million who have Disney+ Hotstar in India. That’s still about 62 percent of what Netflix boasts, at 221.64 million subscribers.

While we're still a long way away from being able to subscribe to ESPN all on its own, it appears that work is very much continuing behind the scenes. Disney CEO Bob Iger, at the company's annual shareholders meeting, gave a brief mention to the previously-announced standalone sports offering.

While no major details were dropped, Iger initially said that "the full suite of ESPN channels" would be available as their own streaming subscription "in the fall of 2025." While the year had previously been announced, the season had not. But it makes a lot of sense, given the importance of college football and the NFL to ESPN.

This is one of those comparisons that may, on paper, seem simple enough. Sling TV is the third-largest live streaming service in the U.S. Hulu Plus Live TV is No. 2 and a good bit more expensive upfront.

After a limited beta launch in late 2023, Hulu content is now officially available via the Disney+ app for those who subscribe to both services via the Disney Bundle, according to Disney. To mark the occasion, the Disney+ app icon has been given a new Hulu-esque greenish hue that the company calls "Aurora," which replaces the previous blue background.

With the launch, bundle subscribers now have access to Hulu content throughout the Disney+ app, including discovery areas like Continue Watching and recommendations.
