Are Jabra’s Sport Pulse wireless earbuds the holy grail for athletes?

IFA 2024
This story is part of our coverage of IFA Berlin 2024
Some athletes might call a lightweight pair of wireless earbuds that work like a fitness band the holy grail of fitness wearables. This elusive product remains hard to come by because wireless headphones require a battery. Plus, batteries that can power a Bluetooth device for a useful duration tend to be bulky. Bulky battery means bulky headphones.

Thankfully, Jabra, perhaps best known for its Bluetooth headsets and speaker products, has begun to crack the code. Announced earlier this year and shown off for the first time at IFA 2014, the Jabra Sport Pulse Wireless Earbuds are a compact pair of in-ear headphones that seat securely, and pair with your smartphone. On top of that, in conjunction with a smartphone app, it tracks your workout, and coaches you through it.

Built into the earbuds are a heart rate monitor and a motion sensor which, combined, can not only track your movement, but the intensity of your movement as well. Paired with a smartphone’s GPS, this combined information allows Jabra’s Sport Life fitness app to monitor your progress towards pre-defined goals, and helps you stay on the path to achieving them.

Check out our video to see the new Sports Pulse Wireless Earbuds and accompanying app up close. You can pre-order them now for $200, and they’ll ship Friday, September 19th, right along with the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Jabra’s $100 Elite 4 are its most affordable ANC earbuds yet
The Jabra Elite 4 true wireless earbuds.

Jabra today launched the latest member of its flagship Elite line of true wireless earbuds, the step-up Elite 4. Picking up where the popular Jabra Elite 3 left off, the $100 earbuds aren't a huge departure, but add some key new features, such as active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth multipoint connectivity, and Swift Pair linking with Windows PCs.

Jabra's Elite line of true wireless earbuds are top performers for the brand (and some of the best earbuds around, period), with several models of them landing on our top earbud lists over the years, including the stellar Elite 7 Pro and the Elite 85t. Sitting at the more affordable end of Jabra's lineup, 2021's Elite 3s were a great-sounding pair of super-comfortable earbuds with easy-to-use physical controls on each bud, and a wide range of customizable features through the Jabra Sound+ app.

Bose kills off its Sport Open Earbuds as new players enter the category
Bose Sport Open Earbuds

Bose has decided to pull the plug on its Sport Open Earbuds, a set of wireless earbuds that sit on your ear instead of inside it, according to a report from The Verge and confirmed by Bose. The move comes less than two years after the product's debut. The remainder of Bose's Sport Open Earbuds is now discounted to $119 (down from its regular $199 price) until all of the inventory has been sold.

The Sport Open Earbuds were the first to try something entirely new for the wireless earbuds market. Instead of placing an earbud inside your ear, or pressed up against your ear canal, they perch on top of your ears, with a portion of the C-shaped device wrapped around the back of your ears. The design has one major strength: it lets you hear the outside world as clearly as you do when not wearing any earbuds at all.
