M-Audio Releases Studiophile Q40 Headphones

M-Audio Releases Studiophile Q40 Headphones

Earbuds may be all the rage for subway commutes and waiting rooms, but audio purists know there’s still something to be said for a clunky pair of cans when it comes to sound quality. M-Audio gave a nod to this concept on Thursday with the release of its Studiophile Q40 closed-back dynamic headphones, which supposedly get some sonic benefit from their size.

M-Audio claims the Q40’s extra-large 40mm driver delivers better low-frequency response than smaller units, and makes use of efficient components. The headphones also have fully sealed backings and isolating surrounds to block out environmental noise. For taking them on the go, they collapse flat to easily pack into luggage, and also come with an storage bag.

Astell&Kern’s new digital audio player makes premium features more portable and affordable
Astell&Kern A&Ultima SP3000M portable digital audio player.

Astell&Kern (A&K) has released a new version of its flagship portable digital audio player that is even more portable and more affordable. The A&K A&Ultima SP3000M takes virtually every feature found on the top-of-the-line A&Ultima SP3000, and puts them in a smaller chassis that weighs 46% less. It's also significantly less expensive (though still pricey): The SP3000M costs $2,299 versus the SP3000's $3,699 price. It will be available starting in November.

Some sacrifices have been made to achieve the SP3000M's smaller size and price, but audiophiles needn't worry, as the internal architecture remains the same. The touchscreen is now smaller (4.1-inches versus 5.46-inches) and it only has a 720 x 1280 resolution (the SP3000's screen is 1080 x 1920). There's also one fewer output options. The SP3ooo has a standard 3.5mm unbalanced headphone jack, plus two sizes of balanced output (2.5mm and 4.4mm), whereas the SP3000M ditches the 2.5mm balanced output.

Karma Kaveya featuring Master & Dynamic sound.

Karma Automotive has partnered with Master & Dynamic (M&D) to bring the New York City-based boutique audio company's sound to two of its electric vehicles. It's the first time that M&D has designed an in-cabin sound system. It says it will also design a selection of "sound tools" exclusively for Karma, including wireless headphones.

The Karma cars in question are Karma’s third-gen Karma Revero, set to begin deliveries later in 2024, and the upcoming $300,000 Karma Kaveya super-coupe. In the meantime, owners of existing Karma Reveros can enjoy Tune, an over-the-air audio upgrade for the Karma Revero sport sedan. According to M&D, Tune lets drivers seamlessly download a proprietary equalization package that "enhances the in-vehicle audio experience with Master & Dynamic’s signature rich, warm sound."
