Sling TV — the third-largest live streaming service in the U.S. — today announced a handful of new features that touch a wide swath of the Sling experience.

Here’s what users have to look forward to:

Recommended Videos

Live sports scores are now available for more leagues, including college football and basketball, the NFL, NBA, NHL, and Major League Baseball. You’ll be able to find team stats, too, including records, seedings, and rankings, as well as live game clocks and scores. And you’ll find more built into the home screen and integrated into the video player, making it all easy to find.

You also can now use your Apple ID to purchase a Sling subscription and manage other purchases and add-ons within the Sling system using Apple Pay.

Sling also has made it easier to immediately subscribe to content recommended through search results, on the home page, or even on other partner platforms.

And user profiles are now available on all devices, so you can personalize your favorite shows, movies, and recordings. An account can have up to five total user profiles, each of which can be individually labeled and color-coded.

“Our top priority at Sling is to provide our customers with the best television experience possible. We want to put people in charge of their entertainment,” Gary Schanman, executive vice president and group president, Dish Video Services, said in a press release. “That means, we look for ways to deliver new innovative functions that elevate the viewing experience and give customers more personalized features and menus allowing them to control what they watch, and how they watch and interact with the information available to them on our service.”

Sling sported just over 2 million subscribers as of October 2023, a little less than half as many as the second-place provider in the U.S., Hulu With Live TV. Sling has a free service that doesn’t even require a user to sign up, and the basic Sling plans start at $40. (With discounts for the first month of service.). Unfortunately, there’s currently no free Sling trial.

The Roku Channel app gets more functionality on Google TV
The Roku Channel app on Google TV.

When I think about Roku, I generally picture my Roku Ultra streaming box or a Roku Streaming Stick and the clean, zippy OS it provides. Roku doesn't end there though. The Roku Channel has more than 350 live channels available for free to anyone that downloads the app. It's (not surprisingly) available on any Roku streaming device or TV, but last year The Roku Channel app also became available on Google TV.

Roku has some updates on the way to improve the way The Roku Channel integrates with Google TV, mainly through its visibility on the home page and search functionality. Instead of having to navigate and search for Roku content within the app, Google TV will now show recommendations from Roku in the Google TV live TV tab. Selecting those recommendations will launch you directly into The Roku Channel app to the desired show or movie. Content will also show up when searched through Google TV's built-in search field.

Just in time for the holidays, Sling TV has announced that it will be increasing its prices by $6 per month, starting on December 20, 2024. The new pricing affects Sling Orange, Sling Blue, and Sling Orange and Blue packages. Sling's last countrywide price increase was in 2022, however, it increased its prices again for select markets in March 2023.

This latest price hike, which Sling TV attributes to the ever-rising cost of programming, brings the cost of Sling Orange to $46 per month, Sling Blue to $51 per month, and Sling Orange and Blue to $66 per month.

Netflix’s hit series Arcane is TV’s best Game of Thrones successor
Jinx wears a hood in Arcane season 2.

Ever since Game of Thrones ended, Hollywood's biggest streamers and TV networks have worked hard to try and replicate its success. Studios like Netflix and Amazon have invested huge loads of money into high-profile fantasy shows like The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, while HBO has attempted to keep the Thrones train going with a prequel series, House of the Dragon, and multiple other in-development spinoffs as well.

Try as they might, though, none of these series have been able to successfully recreate the same alchemy of violence, character development, fantasy worldbuilding, and moment-to-moment unpredictability that made Thrones not only so watchable, but downright addictive. The only show that has come even remotely close to doing that is — shockingly enough — Arcane.
