Sonos says new product (probably headphones) coming by fall

Sonos said today in its earnings call for the first quarter of its 2024 fiscal year that it will announce — and ship — a new product in a new category in the third quarter. While CEO Patrick Spence didn’t shed anymore light as to what the new product will be, it’s widely expected to be headphones.

Sonos’ fiscal third quarter spans April through June. (A previous version of this story said July through September. We regret the error.) The company previously said the new product would land in the second (fiscal) half of the year, and today’s announcement tightens that window to late summer.

“With a solid first quarter in the books, we now turn our undivided attention to the launch of our highly anticipated product, which we will announce and ship in Q3,” Spence said. Sonos will expand its distribution to “a few key distribution partners to broaden our reach and drive new households.” Sonos devices are currently available from (among other places) , , and in Best Buy stores (as well as ).

“We are just months away from announcing our highly anticipated new product in a multibillion-dollar category, which will be the first major milestone of our multiyear product cycle,” Spence said in the earnings release. “Our full attention is dedicated to successfully executing on our plan and positioning our business to return to top and bottom line growth. Great things are happening here at Sonos and the best is yet to come.”

Whatever the new product ends up being, Sonos will have new hardware on shelves in time for the late 2024 holiday shopping period.

Spence in the earnings call said that the entire company is “super excited to get in there,” referring to the new product space. “When we’re thinking about a new category that is new to us, it’s all opportunity. We are approaching it with the kind of energy, excitement, and prudence around investments that we always do.”

The new product introductions coming in 2024 are expected to bring in $100 million in revenue, Sonos said.

Beyerdynamic launches new flagship wireless earbuds and headphones
Beyerdynamic AMIRON 300 and AVENTHO 300.

Beyerdynamic has revamped its top-of-the line wireless earbuds and wireless headphones with two new models, the Amiron 300 ($280) and Aventho 300 ($400). They'll be available in black or white color options when they go on sale in October.

The naming convention of the new models may confuse some long-time Beyerdynamic fans. Historically, the company has used the Amiron name to refer to its wired and wireless over-ear headphones, like the open-back Amiron Home and the wireless Amiron Wireless. However, the new Amiron 300 are the company's flagship wireless earbuds (the company's first wireless earbuds are the Free Byrd.)

Sonos’ public Trello board doesn’t delight
The Sonos app on an iPhone next to a crossword puzzle on an iPad.

At risk of bouncing the rubble even further, we need to talk about where things stand going into September in regards to the state of Sonos.

For a brief bit of context, Sonos in May updated its app and the underlying system software that controls its family of wireless speakers in preparation for the next generation of products — including the Sonos Ace headphones that arrived just weeks later. That update went poorly, and otherwise working (and not-inexpensive) Sonos systems were left in various stages of disarray.

Plex is losing Tidal integration this fall
Tidal on Plex on a TV.

If you've relied on Plex to get your Tidal music fix, the clock is ticking. Tidal will no longer be integrated with the media streaming service starting October 28, 2024.

That's a big deal if you've not had any other way to listen to Tidal. (Which probably means for most end users it's not that big of a deal.) It's probably a slightly larger deal for Tidal itself, as you'd get a preview of the service in Plex's music tab whether you actually had a Tidal subscription.
