Sony Announces Bravia LCD HDTV Brand

Sony today added a new television sub-brand line to join its well known Trinitron brand. The brand, to be called Bravia, will represent the company’s line of high-definition flat-panel LCD TVs.

The first models to carry this new brand, Sony said, will be five LCD TVs ranging in screen sizes from 26 to 40 inches. Bravia stands for “Best Resolution Audio Video Integrated Architecture”.

To celebrate the launch of this new sub-brand, Sony has the Bravia logo on a right field sign at Yankee Stadium as well as recently launching a consumer HDTV education website.

“I’m confident that BRAVIA will become as important and recognized as Sony’s Trinitron brand,” said Dick Komiyama, president and chief operating officer for Sony Electronics. “Consumers look to Sony for leadership in television and BRAVIA signals a completely new tradition — it is the culmination of 36 years of innovation and expertise in TV. Teaming BRAVIA and the New York Yankees is a winning combination.”

Sony is clearly on a mission to simplify its product brands and names. Today, the company has announced the merger of its flagship TVs and soundbars under the Sony Bravia brand. New 2024 Bravia TVs include the Bravia 9, Bravia 8, Bravia 7, and Bravia 3. Its new 2024 soundbars will now live under the Sony Bravia Theater name. These include the Bravia Theater Bar 9, Theater Bar 8, Theater Quad, plus a neckband speaker called the Theater U.

It's a new era for Sony. The company, once famous for its horrible product names that more closely resembled serial numbers, has finally landed on a simple naming convention. Take its new 2024 TVs, for instance. Every new model is now called "Bravia," with a single digit to denote where it stands in the lineup.

The simplified naming convention also applies to the company's 2024 soundbar lineup, with the hope that buyers will want to pair their new Bravia TV with a matching new Bravia Theater soundbar.

A PlayStation 5 connected to a TV, showing the Sony Pictures Core interface.

Sony Bravia Core, the video streaming service that offers movie purchases and rentals in high bandwidths of up to 80Mbps on select Sony Bravia TVs, has launched as its own app on the Sony PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, where it's now called Sony Pictures Core. It can be downloaded for free from the Media section on PS5 and on the PS Store for PS4.

Editor's note, October 10: our original story from October 5 assumed that Sony Pictures Core on PlayStation consoles would preserve the 80Mbps "Pure Stream" feature of Sony Bravia Core on Sony's TVs. However, a report from FlatpanelsHD claims this isn't the case. Those who have downloaded the new app on PlayStation consoles do not see the Pure Stream tag on movies.
