Affordable excellence makes the TCL 6-series the TV to buy in 2018

If you’ve been following our CES 2018 coverage of TVs, then you’ve seen some pretty outlandish, aspirational stuff. Samsung’s 146-in MicroLED “The Wall,” LG’s 65-inch 4K roll-up OLED, and Sony’s 10,000-nit 85-inch 8K LED prototype powered by the company’s X1 Ultimate processor are all grabbing headlines across the ‘net. But what about a TV you might actually buy in 2018? That’s where the TCL 6-Series 4K HDR LED TV comes in.

TCL surprised us in 2017 with its P-series TV, a 55-inch 4K HDR LED with Dolby Vision and the Roku TV operating system built in for just $650. With a 72-zone full array local dimming backlight (FALD) system and expanded color gamut, the P-series performed as well as top-tier TVs from the likes of LG, Samsung, and Sony, but with a much lower price tag.

The new TCL 6-Series builds on TCL’s success, adding more zones to its backlight system and expanding the series to offer a 65-inch model, which has even more backlight zones. With these upgrades and some tweaks to picture processing, the new 6-Series is poised to be one of the best TVs to buy in 2018, and likely the most affordable excellence available on the market.

As is generally the case with CES, manufacturers don’t give exact availability dates and don’t discuss pricing, but if history is any indicator, TCL will let us know when the new 6-Series will be in stores and online for purchase, and just how affordable it will be.

In May, TCL stunned us with the price of its new Q Class QM8 98-inch TV. At a mere $10,000, it was far less than the cheapest comparable model from Samsung. Today, Samsung is answering that challenge with an impressively low-priced 98-inch model of its own: the , which will be available starting in July for $8,000.

Samsung is keen to start moving these behemoth screens as soon as possible, so it's got two launch promotions to entice buyers. Starting today through July 2, if you reserve the 98-inch Q80C on Samsung.com or at participating retailers, you'll get a $500 credit that can be used to purchase the TV during the early order period.

TCL’s 2023 mini-LED 4K TVs are shockingly affordable

TCL has finally revealed its full lineup of TVs for 2023, and it includes a new flagship that is sure to give Samsung and Sony some sleepless nights. The 98-inch QM8 isn't TCL's first 98-inch TV, and it isn't the first 98-inch TV to sell for $10,000 or less, but it is the first mini-LED-powered 98-inch TV to sell for such a low price. Samsung's only 98-inch 4K, mini-LED TV -- the excellent QN90A -- costs 50% more at $15,000. Even the 85-inch model, at $2,800 is surprisingly affordable compared to similar mini-LED TVs.

Sony releases its 2023 TV prices with one very big exception

If you're in the market for a new TV and you've been patiently waiting to see how much Sony is asking for its 2023 models (and when you can buy them), today's the day you find out. Unless of course, you've been waiting to see what Sony wants for its latest flagship, the A95L 4K QD-OLED.
