DVR pioneer TiVo has inked a new agreement with CinemaNow that will make popular Disney films available to TiVo owners in standard definition for a $2.99 rental fee. Users will be able to rent a movie using another device—such as a PC or a mobile phone—and have the movie pushed to their TiVo DVR so it’s ready for immediate playback when users get home.
The new service will be introduced next week for owners of TiVo Series 2, Series 3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL set-top DVRs.
The CinemaNow deal parallels recent agreements TiVo has made with Amazon Video on Demand; with the addition of Disney movies via CinemaNow, TiVo’s rental capabilities now encompass all five major Hollywood studios.
But the major players aren’t the only ones of interest to TiVo: the company has also entered into a partnership with indie film distributor Jaman to offer a variety of international, Bollywood, anime, and independent selections for $1.99 apiece.
